View Full Version : Skipping and misfiring BAD

Last night, truck started skipping and sputtering, backfiring with any more than a "grannyfoot" acceleration. First thought was to check plugs and wires. Two wires had cracked insulation and were arcing to exhaust manifold. The attached pic is what I found when I pulled the plugs. Didn't even have to use a scanner to find it. Maybe I did it wrong. Since the truck now runs right again after $50 worth of plugs and wires, should I keep looking for another cause, I mean since I didn't bother to put the scanner on it? Or am I just being dumb and wasting money by "hanging parts"? The plugs are pictured as they came out, from left to right, cyl #2,4,6,5,3,1.

You should drive to Toledo and let stevo look at it.

I notice this isn't in Codes and SES.... Did it set a light?
My question to you is what would you have done if you couldn't see it arcing?

I notice this isn't in Codes and SES.....because it didn't belong there.
You are correct it was an ignition issue not a codes issue.

F--- that scanner.
Scanners are for pansies that don't like turning wrenches.

They have their place "scanners do". But they are but one tool in the arsenal of a true wrenching artist.

I diagnose my vehicle problems by process of elimination. I take everything I think it could be, everything you guys on here think it could be, as well as what everybody on 3 other forums and a few people I know around here thinks it could be, then put all that in a big group of possibilities. Then I take that group of possible problems and spilt it in 2 separate columns. The I get my lucky silver dollar and mark one column heads and the other tails. Then I flip the coin. What ever column the coin choses, I then split that column in to 2 separate ones and repeat the process over again. I do this until there is one thing left and that's what I fix. It's been working so far.

The big thing is that these trucks seem to fail in similar ways. So why wouldn't you go to a vehicle specific forum just to see what others have experienced.

I'm guessing he would have done it the same way we done it on old cars that don't have an ECM and thats by actually working on the vehicle, pinpointing the problem, and fixing it. The truck was missing, hmm lets see, whats the plugs, wires, rotor and cap look like. If not the obvious keep going.
Or we could scrap the whole thing buy something with a ECM, buy a scanner, then go by the 500 possible solutions to the code it throws that somebody suggests. The whole time said somebody supposedly knows the answer but is sitting on a high horse and calls themselves teaching somebody something by dragging it out for a week.
