View Full Version : trailer wires
I have a 2000 4x4 blazer, how can I tell if its wired for a trailer plug and how can I tell what gears I have for towing? Thanks for your Help Matt :banghead_
for the wiring it should have a wire in the back for the trailer or just have a plug on the rear of the truck that you would be able to see. if not you can buy trailer wiring kits at any local car store and there pretty easy to install.
make sure you dont tow in overdrive if you have an automatic
heres the gears look in your glove box for the code

GU5- 3.23 Rear Axle Ratio
GU6- 3.42 Rear Axle Ratio

HC7- 5.13 Rear Axle Ratio
all the newer trucks are wired you just have to have the pigtail to plug into the harness. You can get the pigtail from advance(or just about any parts store) that fit's between the weather pack conection or you can go to stealership and get a GM harness..

the blazers arent
you need to wire it yourself....
ok You know where the wheather pack(plug/connector whatever you call it) connectes the main harness the taillight harness..they make a pigtial that goes between those 2 connectors. I thinck on the blazers I thinck you have to drill a hole in the floor to get the pigtail outside. It worth it though. Splices come lose and pigtails go bad. it's much easyer to replase a plug in part than to have to figit with ever changeing universal pigtails or have to worry about wirs corrodeing and/or coming apart at the splice or shorting out all together because your electrical tape got hot and melted off. I prefer solder and shrink wraps if you must splice a wire though.

Don't know about drillin' holes in the floorboards! I have a '99 4 dr 4x4 Blazer and the trailer wiring is already run to the back. The six wires are all labeled and are taped up in a piece of black plastic wire loom and tied off to the tail light wire harness behind the bumper. It's wired for the standard 4, left tail, right tail, running, and ground. Plus an auxillary b/u wire, and .......I can't remember the last one. All you need to do is buy the appropriate connector (flat 4, round six, etc..), splice it on and your ready to go.
wow thats pretty easy. i had to locate all my wires than splice into them. but it still wasnt that hard and i have a 93 so they prob didnt do that back then

On your '99, where were you able to find those wires in the back?

You have to crawl under and look, but basically as you're looking at the rear of the truck, about half way between centerline and the left tail light. They were in that black wire loom stuff with that black vinyl/mesh tape tied off to another wire harness. They are in a seperate loom all by themselves. Look right up next to the floorpan between the spare tire and the bumper, they were not hard at all to find. There were six wires...white, green, yellow, brown, light green, and light blue.
Thanks for all the info, got it wired and ready to go. Thanks again Matt
