My friend is about to buy a car with a cam that may not pass smog. Does anyone know some tips to help pass? Do those fuel additives they sell at auto zone work? Also, I have heard that reatrding timing can help. Is that true? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
the only advice i can give you is to ask around and try and find someone who will sneak it by for you. some times those guys that give the stickers come in early on like a saturday before there boss gets there and thats when you can slip them and extra $10 and they'll past just about anything. it helps if you know somebody or know somebody that knows somebody. it is also easier if its older than like a 96 (i think its 96)

haha...i know for a fact if you go to a good old fashion mechanic, with a guy named bubba with about 11oz of chew in his mouf...a bribe will work...
Eh.
When I was in NH for the summer and had to pass emissions I used 2 bottles of scotch for a test fee. Low and behold I passed.

retarding the timing will lower your NOX but also raise your HC's.
I used to be a state inspector until I got caught taking bribes....The state stuck it to me hard, I am still paying ****ing fines!
if the engine is set up right a mild cam woun't fail e-testing. In fact most street application cams you get now days are emmisions freindly, but if your freind really has an issue with this tell him not to buy the car.
BUT>>>>>>>I have a few qeutions before i get into this....first off what year is it? how many miles does the engine have? what state is it being tested in? are all outher emission systems intact? What are the specs on the cam? It a carbed or injected engine? whats the engine size? ford, chevy, dodge????????????
Pour ins don't work....poriod the end....if it ain't going to pass it aint going to pass. there are engine cleaner like seaform though that do clean XseX cardon out of the enngine and help free up and clean injector helping your engine run longer. Don't get cleaners mixed up with gimmik products. Some of these can actually damage buy thickening the oil and gumming **** up and there is no proof that they actually work on a worn out engine. Beside if your spewing noxuis gas and a smoke screen out you tailpipe, I'll turn you in. I like my rods and I'm not going to have people that don't care makeing it harder on me and outher entusiats that build it right and build it better. For every jackass driving an out of tune worn out junker they use that as an excuse to make it harder and more expensive to own and build a customs and moded trucks.
IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO FIX IT DON'T DRIVE IT
Eh.

if your in the northern part of the state you dont need to pass emissions. just pay the $20 and they'll slap a sticker on for you

something that could help if you've got the money, is to buy and install an MSD or similar unit. The multiple strikes make sure the burn is efficient. You should drive it through a tank of gas after install before testing though, a certain magazine ( I can't remember wich) tested a multi spark unit and said that the numbers were horrible right after install because the extra strikes were burning old built up crap out of there, but after a couple hundred miles the numbers were considerably lower. Good Luck, I live in California with restrictions up the wazoo

It is a '89 mustang LX hatch, originally a 4 cylinder car converted to a 5.0. It has a '01 explorer motor (the gt40 block) with gt40p heads, gt40 intake, 1.6 roller rockers, 80MM pro m mass air, MSD 6AL, MSD blaster coil, ford racing 24# injectors, ford racing "f" cam, 288 duration, 512 lift, and GT40 shorty headers. Engine, trans, driveshaft, rear end all have less than 4,000 miles since rebuild. Is there any truth to pouring a gallon of rubbing alcohol into an almost empty tank then going for the test? I have heard that it will help reduce NOx. Also, the stock 4 cat H pipe comes with the car.
if it's tunned, not just thrown together it'll pass, This provided the emissions devises are inplace and working correctly.
alcahol takes water out of gas. it's the same affect as a feul treatment like seafoam

well, as of now it is not tuned, but he is living in alabama for 2 more years so he has until then to get it tuned. just wondering if it would be a money pit or worth the deal. $4,000 for basically a brand new car. new engine, trans, drive shaft, rear end, brand new leather interior, etc... If all he needs is a good tune, and a new intake with provisions for EGR, I guess its a damn good deal. Thanks.
the intake will depend on on visuale inspection. a well tuned engine will be able to scrape by without the egr in plase. he could always install a widget(ask the cali guys about these thing).
i had a car I got a cali car at auction a few years back that had one of those things on it and it passed a TX emissions test. This was before everyone figuered out that the e-testing wouldn't fly around here because of the precentage of old cars and low income familys in this area. That combined with TX's tight emission test at the time that was failing new cars off the lot we no longer have the e-testing in this area, but it's only a matter of time.
