you want a 3980 filter. Dont go with a Fram. Use a purolator or a Wix or something. Anything BUT fram.
Oil, truck calls for 5w30. 4.3 or 4.4 quarts (or liters if ur a Cunuck like I am) Take your pic. I was always a fan of the quakerstate stuff with my other beaters. To each their own.

I run Mobil 1 Full Synthetic in my Jimmy...but its Pricey.

k&n filters way over rated.... Way to much for whats in them. They do have a good can though.
K&N

HP-3001

This filter is a very close match to the Mobil 1 (http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/reference.html#mobil1) filter, which like this one also uses the original "performance" version of the Champion Labs (http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/reference.html#champion) design. The only unique attribute to this filter is the nut welded to the back of the can. This may be handy during removal, but it does increase the overall length of the can which can lead to clearance problems if things are already tight. They make oil filter wrenches in various styles for a reason. The K&N is an expensive filter for what it is, and you can save $2 by getting the Mobil 1 instead.

it went fram moto and napa for quality up here ive herd of k&n but never seen their oil filter and ive only seen fram/motomaster on canadian tire shelfs but i dont usualy look around to often

for sythetic ive always used castrol syntech with a fram

ive only had one problem with fram the o ring didnt seat right and it slowly leaked. by skrewing it off and back on problem was solved

One of the big things is what the valve is made of too. Cardboard will leak.

The FRAM and Motomaster filter is the same filter. One is orange, one is White. Next time ur at Scrappy Tire, pick up a 3980 Fram, and a 3980 Motomaster, and have a look at the caps (the part that threads onto the spigget) Same casting, same stampings. Only difference, motomaster is a buck cheaper I think. 4 something instead of 5 something.

I can see this thread going on forever and ever...

you guys can keep talking about what you think is the best oil....haha

My dad used to work for a company that sold oil additives and if you saw what I saw then you would think they are all junk

As long as you change them both often then you will be ok most of the time...

only reason I went to K&N is for the nutt on the bottom. I get tired of bustin knuckles under the damn truck tryin to fit the strap on there to get it off. Now its effortless. Im gettin "older" and more lazy so fvck it.

I usually use Valvoline or castrol gtx, on the filter I prefer AcDelco, Wix or Bosch. I tend to stay away from Pennzoil or Quaker state due to the high paraffin wax content they contain.

5W30
PF47 or equiv filter
4 and a half quarts
Doesnt matter what brand its about preference. I use Valvoline regular stuff. If you desire synthetics or blends are ok too.

Plug for drainng is on the drivers side bottom of oil pan. Metric but for the life of me IDRC what exact size. Carefull not to strip it in the alum pan IM sure your 97 has. My 03 had a magnetic tipped plug. So if yours does clean the micro shavings off with a rag. Filter is spin oon, vertical on the drivers rear side of the engine block.
I always fill the new filter with oil at least halfway so when it restarts, the element is saturated and the oil is there for startup prime. I also lube the filter top gasket seal with a bit of oil to keep it from sticking to the mating surface. Makes next time easier imo.
Only use filter tool to remove the filter (if you get one). Reinstall by hand and tighten 'er down snug. Wrenching it on can over torque it.
During draining go ahead and remove the dipstick and pop open the refill cap. Males drain a bit quicker.
Good time to check for cooler line leaks. They are metal tunes that run aling the drives side of the pan to the front and then to rubber flex hoses...then into the radiator tank. At the flex lines they tend to start leaking.

Also good time to lune the steering/suspension joints. A greesegun and I use Valvoline ValPlex EP (red) for GM Vehicles. You will see most of the ZERK fittings you need to lube.
Lower Ball joint - bottom near rim
Upper Ball joint - up top and you may have to remove front tire to access it
Outter Tie Rods - tie rod end at spindle
Inner Tie Rods - tie rod at center link
Pittman Arm - at center link from steering box
Idler Arm - pass side linkage from frame to centerlink. Has fittings at both ends
If its been neglected, then squirt greese in and let the old greese spooge out. When you start to see the red fresh stuff, then you are golden. Wipe off all that old stuff.
If you do this about every other oil change, you will be dong yourself a favor. 'Maintenence is cheaper than repair'
Remember that. Old greese breaks down and causes more friction, tiny dirt particles can add to wear and moisture can get in ther easily and start to rust up the internal joints which leads to failures.

^ a right up on how to oil change? what i also do is flush a small ammout of new oil threw dump it in wile it is empty leaving the plug out to let the rest of the dirty oil get pushed though install the plug when the oil looks clean again do not forget somthing to drain the old oil into tends to make a slippery mess if u forget that
