GM to Build 6-Speed Rear-Wheel-Drive Transmission at Strasbourg Plant
General Motors announced it will invest approximately 160 million euros in its Strasbourg (France) plant to produce a new 6-speed rear-wheel-drive automatic transmission.
General Motors announced this week it will invest approximately 160 million euros in its Strasbourg (France) plant to produce a new 6-speed rear-wheel-drive automatic transmission.
GM Strasbourg currently employs about 1,750 people.
The 160 million euros investment includes facility renovation, new machinery, equipment and tooling to support new processes.
“In keeping with our mission of providing the world’s best powertrains, this will be a great product for General Motors,†said Marc Schiff, GM Strasbourg plant manager. “The Strasbourg team has a history of producing world class GM transmissions and this new 6-speed will continue that tradition.â€
Production is scheduled to begin in 2006.
The GM Powertrain Strasbourg transmission plant produces the 5L40E (5-speed rear-wheel-drive) transmission for luxury sedans, performance cars and sport-utility vehicles. GM Strasbourg hosts also the European Technical Center for the development of automatic transmissions.
