I found this site because I was looking for information on a water pump for my S-10, I spent today replacing that, and discovered that the fan clutch is shot also. Is this something that would be safe to get from a salvage yard, or should I just buy new?

find a ford taurus in the bone yard and yank the e fan

If money is tight try it. Most yards won't give refunds but they'll exchange it for another. If you can afford it though I'd say just get a new one.
