View Full Version : Interpret scan readings

Forgive my ignorance as I'm new to these scanners and the reading they give. I just got mine today and read my ECU.
No code errors. Yea!!!
The I/M status readings has me slightly stumped though.
When it give a read of "no" does that mean there is a problem? And then what about the "N/A" reading.
Now what does it mean when the VIN: comes up N/A? I am assuming that the vin is not recorded on the ECU.
Also the OBD2 Protocal gives SEA VPM. Is that a misread or valid?
The vehicle is a '97 blazer 4.3 vortex engine.

i dont understand exactly what u r trying to say either
what scan tool are you using?
n/a means "not applicable" (ie. it doesn't matter or it is not there).

Let me explain with the photos.
Pic 1 is the scanner I have
Pic 2 shows what the scanner's options are. I am interested in #2
Pic 3 shows what the readings are from #2 (I/M STATUS) this is page 1
Pic 4 shows page 2 of the readings
Pic 5 is what this scanner reads regarding the VIN #
My question is what exactly is I/M STATUS and when it gives a NO does that mean the componant is defective or non exsistent? And what about the N/A?
Again does that mean this vehicle does not have those componants?
Regarding the VIN I was with the understanding that the ECU should have this info in it's programming so why would I have a N/A reading?
Vin is stored in the ECM, although probably not accessable with just a code reader. Sounds like its having trouble communicating. Was your cel on or not. And its vortec

No
it is spelled Vortec.
I knew that but the finger that typed it did'nt.
every manufacturer uses different terminology. i don't know exactly what i/m stands for. (might check the manual.) from what it looks like tho, i/m is the equivalent to "emissions readiness" tests.
like i said before. n/a means not applicable. meaning your car doesn't have it or the scan tool can't check it. (either way it doesn't matter, because you cant do anything with it).
no. im not really sure on this one, you really would have to check the manual. i am not familiar with this particular scan tool, however if i had to guess i would say that it means "fail".
ok, i looked a little more. i cant find a manual (maybe yours came with it, looks like it might be on a cd.)
the i/m is what i said. but it checks to see if the car has run its own test. the scanner does not test the components on its own. (all new cars do this, if they fail, and its something important the check engine light comes on.)
this means that the "no" could just mean that the test has not been completed by the car yet. if you have had the battery dissconnected recently or cleared the computer with the scan tool, it will take time to finish all the tests. some tests require a certain number of starts, or that you drive a certain distance to be complete.
i recommend that you drive it for a while (maybe up to a week) and check it again. by that time the tests should have had time to complete.
this is all assuming you cant just read the manual and find out.

Thanks for the info. I did get the manual and a cd but provides no info only how to do the differant functions. It's more of a waste of paper.
The CEL has been coming on when I do a hard acceleration but after a few starts go's back off. When I did the first scan I did get an error but now nothing. I don't drive to much but will redo a scan like you suggested.

The vehicle has not been operated long enough to perform a catalyst test. Drive it around longer.
You probably don't have heated O2's so it's N/A.

Like said before, N/A=not applicable/available. "No"= not ready. Atleast to my understanding.
quit copying my answers! you have to take the test ON YOUR OWN!
