What swap would be easier in a 99 sonoma two wheel drive with an automatic. A ls1 or a vortech 350 from the same year? Also where can I find more info on these swaps into the newer trucks? Besides the JTR book.

You are gonna have the same number of computer inputs (sensors etc) I would go with the LS1. More potential for power, and upgrades. (heads, cam, intake and a few other little add ons give you an LS6). plus you have a ton of F body sites that can give you tech. help with the engine and tuning.

Only downside is those LS1's bring a premium at the U pull it or salvage yards

Well the 99 vortec engines available are different then the 350 vortecs of 96 to 98.The 99 up vortec engines are designed on the same platform as the LS1 engines except they are not aluminum. But they still offer more power than the early style 350 vortec engines. The 350 vortec is rated at 255hp/330tq.Pretty decent amount but not compared to the next generation vortecs. The 4.8 is rated at 270hp/285tq.Which is not bad at all for such a small displacement engine. The 5.3 is rated at 285hp/325tq"2004 up 5.3's have 295hp/330tq".And then you have the 6.0 rated at 325hp/370tq and the HO version at 345hp/380tq.The 6.0 vortec is a great engine that makes great power. Now to the LS1 side of the coin. The LS1's horsepower rating has always been way under rated. You real life LS1's true horsepower rating is around 325hp for early versions and 345hp for the later versions. With torque being about 340/350.With plenty of potential to make much more. The latemodel vortecs are great engines and you couldn't go wrong with any of them. But for over all potential to build on the LS1 is a much better choice. And the aftermarket is HUGE for the LS1.The LS1 is so choked for air even minor mods to get more air in makes a noticeable improvement.I did have a dyno chart showing a 2000 SS camaro making 11 more horsepower just by using a aftermarket intake lid and K&N filter. They are just that starved for air.Well anway ive rambled on like SuperchargedZQ8 again lmao!!I just wanted to give ya a little info on the engines you were considering.I hope it helped you some.It just gave me a reason to talk about my favorite subject, engines lol.:D

As for install both are going to be tricky. The 96-98 5.7L 350 vortec i think would be easier cause the 4.3L is basically the same minus 2 cyclinders. But the LS1=more hp from the getgo. Could build up the 5.7L and get some good #s ... could also do it to the LS1. http://www.v8s10.com recommends the 5.7L in the new body S10s.
Then you could get a Supercharger from Wynjammer. S/c 5.7L ah ... been pondering this myself. I think i would go this way because of previous right ups and I would want to do it myself. 5.7L = easier and the s/c should fit with almost or no problems.

I bought there conversion book b/c i was goin to do one in 1 of my first gens but i smashed them up. Now im thinking on doing it with the sec gen and giving the 4.3SFI to my slowly dieing jimmy 4.3TBI @ 250000+ kilometers.

Then maybe ill s/c both after the conversions are done. :)
