View Full Version : Installing a Floor Shifter
Ok guys you walked me through the wynjammer and boost gauge, now I'm going try my luck with a floor shifter.
I'm not sure about the column shifter lever removal, and the wiring, for like the shifter lock out thingy, what to hook it into?
I believe the shifter itself and console will be self explanatory. For there looks to be a plate on the underneath side, to bolt up the shifter mounting plate.
Should I cut the carpet for the mounting plate install?,for my truck came with 60/40 seats, and I switched it to buckets, the console I have, is just setting there, not bolted down.So I'm kinda lost on locations.
But I think the column shifter removal, and the wiring is my main concern.
Do I put in neutral when I start this deal, does it make a difference?
I've read that you hook the light for the shifter to the lumination light??? behind the radio??? This really has me bumbfuzzeled
I could really use all the help with this I can get, I have read over the how to section on this, and it gives me an idea, but still a little unsure what the heck I'm supposed to do.
I had a guy that was supposed to help me with this, but he had other obligations.
Help Please:confused:
Who on here has done the switch from column to floor? I really need some advice about what to remove from the column.

So just by removing the shift lever, you were still able to put the column cover over it?
Wow what an exciting day, being the weather was half way tolerable I thought well I might as well install the console and shifter.
Lets just say that the thing looked pretty in pictures, but it doesn't mean that it was pretty to install.
The mounting plate wouldn't allow the top part of the console to even come close to sitting on there, the bracket for the cup holders was too tall.So I had to modify that, then by the time I got it so that it would fit right, the tranny cable wouldn't go all the way through to connect that. So I had to modify that.
I didn't even use the mounting plate, I just bolted her to the floor and made me some adjustable bolts.to raise and or lower the shifter to the right height. so the gear selector was flush. That took me the a-lotted time given, to just install the shifter alone. 2-3 hrs.
Running the cable was the easiest part on the tranny, just squeeze the tabs and pull, but running the cable under the carpet was a royal pain.
The shifter lever on the column, I just removed the whole stinking assembly off.
But after I got all the b/s out of the way, yeah it was piece of cake.
It works, shifts fine, looks really sharp, I got all the gears,...only other problem was that D-Caf had the tilt steering wheel, column cover, which I don't have tilt, lol,... but I got one on the way, and then there's the wiring,.. I still have that to do, if I could just find out what goes to what, and or where.
All in all, can't say if it was, or wasn't worth it.Still needs a little tweaking, I've got some other things I need to do, but it doesn't relate to the floor shifter.
I kept seeing red stuff on a few things, and I couldn't figure what the heck it was, or where it was coming from, until I looked at my hand, and it was bleeding profusely.I didn't even know I had cut myself, that was because I was getting so tired I was numb.
So lets see, a so called 2-3 hr job turns into about a 12 hr. job, ummm yep that's about right for me, Keep in mind there were a few errands I had to run, which consumed 20-30 minutes out of the 12. I'm about par for the course.
Give me the good ole muscle car days any day.
Time for a hot shower.

Hell Ed,just sounds like a typical project to me!lol
Hell Ed,just sounds like a typical project to me!lol
LOL LOL yeah pretty much,I seem to make a project into more than what it actually is, I don't why it happens, but sure the heck does.
It's not that bad really, but when nothing lines up, or don't fit just quite right,or have to modify this or that, that's when it becomes, time consuming.
I like it, though, still don't have it all wired up, just zipped tied for the time being, because my garage don't have a roof on it,.... it don't have any walls or a floor for that matter.
It decided to rain again, so it looks like I won't be able to do anything with it till Friday, and by that time I'll be out of the notion. lol
I know one thing, if I continue to work on this thing, I need to invest in a hot tubb, or Sona to help with the body aches and pains. The only thing I've got, is a hot shower, heat pad, and horse liniment.
Funny thing I went to pick up our daughter from High School, I got in the truck started it up, and kept reaching for the column lever, lol lol I thought "hey ya moron, ya put it on the floor"!!!
Next project is the 3.73 gears, lol lol, oh heck no, I'm having a professional do that one.

Looks just like any other console install, unless you want pictures of my adjusting bolts, :o But dang, I hate to tear it apart just to get pictures lol :fight_125

Yeah, pics! Oh and sorry about the column cover, didn't even think that you might not have tilt steering.
Congrats on getting it in! That's a project I wanted to do, but obviously never got round too.

Got-er in though works just fine, lol lol never gave it a thought about the column cover till it ran across my mind that you have a Blazer, they usually come with tilt wheel, so I unwrapped it, and yep, tilt wheel. So I ordered one, no biggy,
I'll get some pictures here pretty soon.
Ok, here's a few shots after install, notice in one pic.I have a square hole to fill, and replace the column cover.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it, more than you know, trust me, the guy that was supposed to help me out with this just texted me and asked if I was ready to install the floor shifter, lol lol I told him "No I changed my mind" lol lol.
Then I told him I already did the install, for I didn't know when he would have free time, he just laughed, and told me "See you can do it, if you just try"
I used to stuff like this all the time, back in the day, things are just sooo much different, but then they're not, if that makes any sense.
But yeah, dadgum, my S15 is a 5 speed,I drive that about 70 % of the time, and then when I get in the S10, I'm reaching for the clutch, and the lever.
I went to the store a little bit ago, good thing I set my emergency brake, I forgot to put the darn thing in park
I've got so many stories, I should I guess write a book, people need to laugh more often these days.

Looks good.

It's already spoken for, sorry.

LOL LOL I tell ya I had no clue where to put the darn thing,It was a real tedious job cutting the hole and not breaking the plastic piece.I didn't want it on the column or on top of the dash,I've noticed that some of these places have column covers with built in gauge pod(s) but not for the S10,
I guess they think people with S10's or Noma's don't need gauges there, so they just have the pillar pod thingys, lol lol
But I thought it looked pretty good there
I'm having all sorts of problems not getting the interior (plastic) dye to match up, I was told graphite, so I got some SEM graphite and it's some what lighter than the rest.
I did see that the 01 and newer full size GM has a very dark graphite, think I might give that a try.
