View Full Version : I need to know: 327 swap
Vortec heads and intake will fit a 327, correct?
Also, approx how far will I have to move the radiator forward?
Any other big modifications required for this swap?

Your combination will kick in 20-35 horsepower and the stock pistons will not hit the valves. The combustion chamber cc's are the same size as the old camel backed " double hump" heads with 2.02 intakes. The problem with the old heads is the intake chambers are only 157cc's.
The 99 Vortec iron heads with 1.94 intakes has 170 cc's. If this will be a street driven car sad as it may seem I'd go for flat top pistons which will render a tad over 10-1 compression ratio. If you leave the dome pistons in the motor you'll be into the 11-1 range, I'm not sure if today's crappy 93 octane slow lead will satisfy the motor. But you will need headers valve covers and intake for the vortec heads.
now on the rad im not sure

Engine's a '67 275 horse with flat tops. Sounds good to me. I'm going to be running the 99 intake too. I'll ship the ECM from the 350 off to wait4me and get it tuned for the Lunati 292/292 cam I have sitting around, and for 327 cubic inches, of course.
It's ironic that you mentioned the double humps, I have a set of fuelie heads under my work bench. :p
I'm going to be using e-fans and no clutch fan. Probably will be running true duals with FM Super 44s, catless of course.

You can keep the radiator in the stock location on a 2nd gen & run the fan in front of the radiator (pusher fan).

292? if it's like the 292 we put in a Camaro years ago, it was a pretty healthy bump stick, you running and automatic behind that? If so better run a stall, make sure you got screw in studs.

I'm going to be running a fairly high idle. Probably around cold idle for a 4.3 (900-1100ish)
It'll probably want to haul ass when just sitting in drive, but it'll idle.
Just keep in mind you won't have that much vacuum either. This Camaro we did, the guy said, "oh it will be ok, they told me we won't have any problems", lol lol yeah right, he thought he was going to go out and be big and bad, he stomped into it and the stud came up out of the heads, I said "I told ya, you should have done the screw in studs".

Yeah, I won't mind a vacuum lack too much. Red lights are LONG around here so I won't mind shifting to neutral and giving it a little blip every 10 seconds or so to get vacuum.

If your backing that up with an Automatic just run a stall. What kinda of intake you planning on using?

Lack of vacuum? Install a hybroboost! I've got one here that one of the guys asked me to get him & then backed out on the deal.. you want it I'll sell it to you at a fair price.

Vacuum cans don't look cool under the hood, add weight & don't add more braking power.. because hydroboosts were designed for larger trucks that weigh about twice as much. But, again.. that's the cheap way, I think the cheap way is tacky most times & should only be used to get by in a pinch.

Vortec heads and intake off a last year 350. Actually got it all mounted up less than an hour ago.
I'm only using that cam because it's all I have. Everything in this build is either free or cheap as hell, which is why I want to avoid using a stall.
I'm not going to be putting it in the truck until the spring, though. By then I'll have my other car on the road and can take as long as I want to do the actual swap.
I'm going to be running a tuned ECM and FI.
