View Full Version : T Man's - Painting the interior
Well, I've started to paint the interior of my truck, and am pissed. These pics dont do the color any Justice. It is a deep Red, with really fine metal flake. It looks really good and will look awesome when it is done.
Here is what I got from the Junkyard. $20

any tips for making it stick and not flake off?
also, how does it look with the textured plastic? i am thinking of painting my interior pieces silver. i think that would look good with the graphite interior.
thanx!!!

Primer the crap out of it!!!!!1
I used High Build Primer. As long as the piece doesnt need to have too much flex in it. (Interior Trim pieces wont) Then be patient, and lay down several good coats, then clear the **** out of it. Each piece has 5-7 layers of clear over the 3-5 coats of paint and 3 or so coats of Primer. The Duplicolor High build primer holds to the interior pieces very well, provided you clean the pieces first. I used hot water, dawn, and one of those sponges that has the green thing on the back to clean them. Im hesitant about using the stuff to make it tacky, im scared it would melt the plastic, so I dint use any. Just be careful when you reinstall everything.
The metal flake looks awesome on the textured plastic. If you lay down enough light coats then it wont just sink down into the low spots, but it will stay everywhere. I wish I had a camera good enough for you guys to see it. It is night and day between the new paint and the old. It is a little brigher, much deeper, and the metal flake adds a whole new dimension, plus all the black that was in there in the original dash has been painted a Krylon Semi Gloss black, which offsets the shine perfectly. (I painted the sill plates with the krylon, right over the dirt, and so far, it has has held up wonderfully)
I know you cant really see it too well, but as for the actual color this is as close as any of the pictures I have

did you wetsand the clear at all? when i painted my main dash piece (2nd gen) black, of course doing some good wetsanding in between.... when i cleared it, it looked hazed over and dull, almost like i had spilled something on it. it made it look horrible, and I had to sand off most of the clear.. freakin irritating.
Looks good though!
Didnt wetsand at all. Primed, sprayed, cleared.
I did get high as hell one night though. It was raining so the garage door was closed, and those fumes seemed to stay where they were. I had a hell of a headache the next day. Just because you are in a big building doesnt mean you dont need to be in a well ventilated area!!!

I would also use bulldog adhesion promoter from walmart or any store like that.....It's cheap...and it will help the paint stick....High build primer also rocks......
Hope that helps...
