Hey Guys,

Yesterday I brought home a little '99 L31 350 core, minus crank. It's from a 1500 Suburban, and the crank was removed in two pieces. It looks like the crank split due to casting flaws, after 80K miles.

My plans are to build a stroker 385ci short block that I will than transfer over my current heads & valvetrain. It'll be a while before I can even get started, I'll have to get past the holiday season before the funds can get set aside for parts.

The Vortec heads are up for sale on craigslist:

The first thing to do will be a dunk in the tank and than a check for cracks. If everything turns out good I'll bore the block to 4.040" and clearance for a 3.75" crank. Since this block is a two bolt mains I figured I'd machine to use splayed 4 bolt mains.

The rotating assembly I'm looking at will come with just a standard cast crank, I-beam 5.7" rods and H860CP-40 flat top pistons. CR should be 10.5-1 static.

For fun, this is what desktop dyno estimates the power output with the new short block and my current heads & cam

ha, I wish.

Cheers ~Mykk

Yes, I feel the 357ci has just had a hard life thus far with all the experiments to get it to run right... fuel injection, than carb, running rich, running lean, different cams, different heads, etc.

I am also on a never ending quest for more... this time it's more displacement

After doing some research, it turns out I picked up the worst block to try and build a stroker. It has the casting 880, and has short cylinder's... a 3.75" stroke with 5.7" rods will cause the piston to come out of the cylinder almost up to the wrist pin, and will make audible knocking. The can all be fixed by using 6" rods, wich I will... but those stroker kits cost more and will further delay the build.

Or a different comp height piston.

Since were hosting thanksgiving this year at my place, I figured I'd clean up my storage & mock up the motor. Just for the car guys of the family.
