Is it possible to remove the shift knob on a '97 4.3 5 spd? My haynes manual says there should be a nut at the bottom, but there is none that I can see. It really don't go in depth as to how to do it. Any help? Thanks.

yep they are right there is a nut at the bottom . you have to push the boot all the way down to even feel it .
to get it out . remove center console . push boot down . loosen nut , unscrew shifter .
though the actual KNOB wont come off you can replace the shifter with a billet one and then you will be able to use any shifter you would like. at least with a little know how and imagination .

hmm, how much would a billet shifter cost, and where do they sell em? it probably wouldnt look too good in my stock interior either, lol. i guess i could just sand it and paint it black.
if you just want to replase the shift knob greab it wit a pair of vice grips and twist. Yes this will break it(unless your one of the fortunate few that have a threaded shift knob)
now how do you replase it?
either get a set screw shift knob or a dye and tread the shifter. you'll need to make an adapter to get an aftermarhet ****erknob. a few helicoils will work.

hmm...that wouldn't work for me. I can see it comming now...major **** ups, etc, etc...nothing is simple for me on a car. i guess ill just buy the billet shifter i found for $50, and get a new knob for it. thanks tho.

i just went ahead n ripped mine right off...then took a bouncy ball that fit my hand well n put a hole in it that was a tiny bit smaller than the shifter n jammed it on there...hasnt come off yet n its one of the most comfortable shift knobs ever...if you can find a nice bouncy ball i say go for it, it doesnt look half bad either, but yes very half ass but i like it
