Heh, so ive managed to piss off the arizonak5 web site, :) all i had to do was mention what im doing and BAM! instant chast. Heh you would think they would be happy, a clean, fresh, 1st gen body just became available to somone with a rusted out body and a true appreciation for the k5. They are telling me to "wheel the k5", screw it, im gonna bash it up anyway, let somone else have it.
on a lighter note, found an engine out a 81 burban, runs great, I gotta pull it, soon drop the motor, and i can begin the fab, see what happens.
question about front tire/wheelwell issue, with the cab as close to the motor, how far off center is it?
thanks
will post progress.
sorry bout the nag, kinda thought it was funny...
Somehow, that doesn't surprise me. I'd think someone would be happy to get that K5's body.
As for the front tire/wheelwell issue, with the cab as close to the motor, I'd say the axle will sit 4" forward of center.

any thoughts about just moving the axle?

Sold the body to a guy from north carolina. gonna use it on his 72 2wd as his beach cruiser. put a big smile on his face. mine too for that matter. I found a good 350 for 100 bucks, gonna pick her up tomorrow. ordered my engine overhaul kit, new clutch, and motor mounts. bought ****load of primer and undercoat, my square stock for my body mounts, oil, plugs, coolant, new angle grinder. !Box o' legos! hopefully i will have the frame cleaned and rubberised by the time the overhaul kit gets here. drop my engine and go from there.
so not bad, not bad at all. project is funding itself, for now http://www.arizonak5.com/forum/Smileys/classic/smiley.gif
went mudding with some friends the other night,, im saying screw it. I want to get out in some mud!
not gonna move the power train yet, i can do that **** later. gonna just cut my fenders from the front and roll it in, tube frame bumper, give it a slight prerunner look.
so stoked

god im tired...
So yeah, gonna go tinks route.. drivetrain is comming forward two or three... got a quote on my driveshafts, $180 clears it. way better than what i thought...
as far as cab mounts, gonna use most of the OG s10 mounts, then use some two inch 1/2 square stock to fill it in.

Gonna use some 1/2'' angle and make like a "crossmember" between the rear two mounts, then weld directly tothe frame.

one thing im concerned about, my tranny is a sm 465, it is a mechanical release. the s10 is hyd clutch. hydro is signif better so i deff want to go that route. do they make 350 bellhousings that are hyd? ive heard of kits out there, but i wanna see what i can do with whats available. you think i could make a bracket for the clutch master off my s10 and have it actuating the release arm? are there any threds where somone has gone from hydro to mechanical on any vehicle?
thanks for your praise and input, its highly encouraging.

I'm pretty sure you can use the older mechanical bellhousing with a hydraulic release bearing which will elminate the clutch fork. I found a slip-on hydraulic throw out bearing. McLeod (http://www.mcleodind.com/index.html (http://www.mcleodind.com/index.html)) p/n with master cylinder: MCL-14005-20.
Or you could 'copy' one of the kits if you have good fab skills: http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_hcrc.htm

Great! thanks tink. first link was bad, but the other one, i have seen a while ago and havnt been able to find it since. thats pretty much what i have been thinking about. fab a bracket, trim the fork, drill out a depression for the masters actuator..
well the agenda for today;
move my cab back, pull my drive shafts, pull the motor and tranny and start measuring up for the move. exactly how far did you end up moving yours?
what were the biggest of the problems you encountered when you finally got her on the road? the bugs that you had to work out?
heh, i lucked out, for my rear driveshaft alone, he quoted me $180 beacause he would have to order a new tube. He can shorten just fine, but to make it longer sucks. With the k5, i got an assortment of other truck parts, and theres a chevy long bed driveshaft, with the exact same yokes that is almost 10 inches longer than my k5s rear drive shaft.so he dosent have to lengthen either of em. so hes gonna do em both for $180.

yeah, they are getting better... its proably due to that you see people come on these forums saying they are gonna do this and this with this and that, start their build and drop it and they never hear from em again.
I'm showing progress and its badass, they are coming around. the moderator of the site is giving alot of insite.
i can see where they are comming from. that would tick me off if somone hacked up a good porsche and never finished it and left it to rot as a pile of parts. but finish it, and it comes out badass would be somthing i would like to see. also the guy who bought the tub was feeling just as good about his project as im feeling about mine.:) that alone is worth it too me.
the s10ks soul is still a k5, just had a little tummy tuck... cosmetic surgery.:chef_125:
my tires i want as big as i can go on a 12.50x15" rim.

I moved mine about 4" forward... it was probably 3.75".
The biggest problem I had was the headers are very close to the front driveshaft and sometimes rub on turning/compression. Other than that I had some running issues from the motor sitting (carb loading) and I did have some cooling issues and ended up having to run a giagantic radiator instead of the S10's radiator.

Thats odd.. I always thought ATF was more of a hydraulic fluid than it is a lubricant, also has coolant propertys.
I'm pretty sure there is gear oil in the T4 in our 83.

Drive train is moved forward 3 1/2 inches. thats as far as i can get it without having to mess with other brackets. I was over thinking this task for a while now, but turned out cake. got it done by myself in about 3 hours. Funny thing, i bought a dewalt 1/2 inch carbide drill bit and 3 cheaper company 3/8'' bits. The self piloting dewalt crapped out on th first hole, "thank god i only needed two. heh and i only used one "cheap" 3/8 bit for the rest of the 16 holes, no pilot or nuthin.
it all lined up great!

Dewalt makes great tools, their drill bits, screw bits, and hole saws are crap. The drill bits and hole saws don't hole an edge and break or break teeth. The screw bits are weak and snap easily. The magnets in their stuff are also about the weakest on the market.
Glad to hear it went well!

just been leveling out, i havnt had much help so its slow going. shimmy the cab alittle, take a measurement, run to the other side, measure, shimmy, measure, repeat... but i pretty much got it where i want it. i made sure all mounts were level at its lowest achievable point, "about 3/4" between the cab and the frame". i am gonna use lift pucks to put it where i want and i can do that anytime.
I'm quite impressed with how the OG s10 body mounts are working out, the rear cab mounts combine the front box mounts with the rear cab mounts and lined up pretty badass with the OG mounts of the K5 frame. its all tacked up, so i will take pics when im solid.. The front mounts when attached to the cab, are exactly 3 1/2" away from the frame, im gonna use two 3 1/2" lenghts of sched 80 pipe and weld direct. i cant wait,, soon comes all the easy stuff!!! putting her back together and i'll have a truck again!!!
http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs515.snc3/27038_106473919382002_100000581828482_140612_78348 61_n.jpg
Still getting used to flux core. the miller 250s at school make my hobart feel like welding with a battery sieries. i've only used the welder for light bodywork.. the inserts i used in these mounts are actually coupons from school, so at least a few welds on my truck will pass inspection.:)

gonna finish my front mounts, make sure of my square one last time, lift the cab for the last time, and weld everything solid. then front core support and front end goes together. then the box..
Would someone with a 1st gen extended cab short bed take a measurement for me? from center wheel opening to front of bed?
The Box,,, im thinking of cutting 15 inches out of the front of the bed, i made that measurement with lining my wheel openings up. gonna jig the box infront of the cut, do my cut, cut out the front end cap out of the bed, weld in, mount the light bar and tool box. also shave the fuel door.
My trans am fuel door wont work cuz the license plate will sit lower than the fill spout on the tank..
Good stuff. Getting the cab right where you want it is fun. :p It is great you can use the S10's body mount brackets... sure wish I could have done that on mine.

so the wheel wells line up with the tires. its about a foot and a half off. People are saying "tube it" but naw, i wanna retain the usefull values of a truck bed, i got a long boat, i camp, fish, hunt, RV, paintball, build stuff...
And yeah, im gonna beef all the mounts up better, i just wanna be absolutly sure its where i want everything at.
Gawd! i had the biggest smile on my face all day today. This is comming along so badass and its just such a fun build to do. ive been dreaming about this for a couple years now and its so crazy watching this come to reality.

Hell yeah guys, thanks.
heh, if you put a lt1 in a pinto, its still a pinto... lol, i would own that pinto...
the license plate bracket not working is just a theory, im gonna have to wait and see where my bumper lines up, too bad my gas tanks plastic and i cant relocate the inlet.
as it looks now, my plates gonna be lower than the fill spout, and theres talk of raising my tank up 6 inches. so as of now its a nogo.
today im gonna mock my front end, mount the core supports, inner fender wells...either that or start on the bed.
yo 83chevys10, when you gonna do a thread on yours? i would like to see how you went about yours, mounts, steering, underhood, comon man, give us the scoop.
i found another site with alot of wicked straight axle s10s

Flatbed, naw. think that would look like everyother work truck in az. :)
i was thinking bout a basic tubeframe box with my toolbox mounted on it and lock in ammo boxes but a bed is way more practical.
I scooped up a set of brand new 4" bushwhacker rears on ebay for like 50 bucks a few moths ago, the straight ones with out the mock rivits. and friggen lost out on a set for the front by 1 dollar last week. i want four inches on the back and like 2 on the front for mudding purposes.. i really want a set of fiberglass prerunner fenders, but i dont know how it would look with a bushwhacked rear end. the fenders come to about $320, and the rear glass bedsides are like 420 i believe.
The frame diffs, I've been noting too. from what i've been seeing, my frame is just a longer k10-k20 frame, round what, 74? 75? when they went to the half sized top, they started making it into its own frame..

Damn my heart just skipped a beat.. i was reviewing my thread and was looking at this picture, looks off, way off.
i went out and took measurements and im spot on from all the mount locations. maybe the angle of the pic? my drive uneven? i know the fuel cell throws it way off, but if you look past it it looks good, are the cab mounts offset? why is this pic so off, i moved it back in front of my shop and it looks fine and meaures up good... the bar ontop of the bed mounts is just a "jig".
It must be the angle of the pic... you can see more of the inside of the passenger's side rear tire than of the driver's side, so it is angled slightly.
There are some good guys over a s10extremists... I wheeled with them a few years back (pre-Baja).
Your front crossmembers appear a little different and your kick-up in the rear is much less than mine was.

thinking about putting the rad in the bed, im gonna jig the bed, cut the 15 inches out, cut 2 inch slots in the top and bottom of the front end of the bed and louver the bed sides out like side induction, use steel dimond grille for the bed endcap. mount my rad at an angle behind the tool box.
87wildside
03-26-10, 11:35 AM
If you angle the rad with the top forward and up, bottom down and back and use pullers you should be fine. I've seen them mounted on roll bars with no holes in the bed. That's on crawlers. Don't know if this is a mud truck, crawler, all around or what but if you can get away with not cutting the box I would say don't. Keep the mud out of the rad.
vdubvance
03-26-10, 12:11 PM
right on, thats good advice. i want it all around, i want 3D mud stains when it comes time.so it would be best to do the modification to my core support and keep it in its stock location. we got some sticky ass mud here. friends are always burning out windshield wiper motors.

still gotta nip an inch off the front, my origonal plan was to cut notches and bend tabs in so i would have a good surface to weld. but i have confidence in my body work so am gonna weld a full seam. you can see where i started to cut the end cap off. im cutting the outer skin right at the edge while the inside skin needs about 3 inches. getting stuff to line up right is a pain in the ass.
once i have the endcap on, i will start shaving the fill door. I think i might be able to run the yak fill door after all!!
I shuld be focused on engine, drivetrain, stuff like that, but my neigbor was talking to me over the fence, "you make a junkyard almost as good as you can build a truck"... what a dick... im working on it... he said it with a smile on his face so it wasnt that bad... though i agree with him. i have various "keep" "sell" and "toss" piles scattered across the yard. BMW piles, K5 piles, old s10 piles, new s10... and various other crap i cant bring myself to throw away.

Got my steering shaft from ebay, sucks.... knuckles are alu... so i had to go mcgyver on its ass... i milled out the k5 side and pressed a connecting pin from an old vw piston, drilled holes through the knuckle, ran the ground to the connecting pin and backfilled the holes with weld, that will keep it from twisting. i then welded the splined coupler from the k5s box to the pin. the cabs side was easy, just drilled a 3/8" hole and tapped a bolt through. i had to shorten the shaft too, it still retains its telescoping ability. just cut out a piece of the outer shaft, use a piece of inner shaft as a jig to do the tacks, pull out the jig and do my weld. came out great! no play and i gots lots of clearance.

man my skin welding is getting so much better... i actually had fun with this project. my cuts came out perfect wich helped alot and im really starting to get the hang of that little hobart.. i would like to go GMAW but seeing that i dont have an actual shop, and most of my welds are done outside, fluxcore is more practical.

lol, thanks guys. "im surprised noone posts" lol its been done already! its a rerun!! if ive seen the show once, i dont wanna watch it again!!
"fluxcore for body work" it can be done and come out nice as long as you take your time, have confidence, and do your prep work.gotta get all that slag off or you will constantly burn through. a castle tip makes it significantly easier. This was my third time doing skin welds so, anyone can do it. I shaved my doorhandles, makerlights, and fixed a hole in the firewall of my bmw, the rocker panels of my friends 01 f150. the first marker light on the beemer i want way too fast and warped it all to hell,, got almost a quarter inch of bondo in a spot.... sucks. but moved to the next one and that came out a lot better.
Heh, had a group of friends come out last night, the group that was all like "dont do it man, it will look like ****" "wheel the k5".. yeah they were all grins and giggles, "that thing is bad...." "son of a *****.... your trucks bigger than mine.."
havnt got as much done lately, just got done with a big job so ill be home for a good week and will be at it hardcore again. hmmm im having issues with my uploads.bummer! well im gonna get a move on.. ill try to fix this asap, and shoot off some more pics.

sorry guys.. ive been a little distracted for the last weekend...
i have a 77 bmw 320 under the cover in the background that i have been restoring for a while, im waiting for it to warm up so i can shoot her.
meanwhile....
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab226/vdubvance/HPIM0440.jpg?t=1271170947
picked her up on sat. my $250 1982 320 i. got her running yesterday
she needed crapload of vac lines, cap, rotor, plugs, wire, internal fuel pump, which i have doubles of all. I HATE TWEEKER CRACKHEADS!! the overall car wasnt tweeked to bad, just the ignition and the fuel pump coulda killed me!!! get this.. i pull the rear seat to get to the fuel sending access cover, and find the power plug to the internal fuel pump unplugged, "well theres your problem right there" i plugged it back in, and turned the key, and nothing happened... "thank god".... anyways i pull the whole sending unit, pump, screen housing out, and it looked like this
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab226/vdubvance/HPIM0443.jpg?t=1271171659
so when i plugged that plug in, the orange wire hanging there became "hot" what if that had ground out inside a full tank? BOOM! assholes..."WHO DOSE THAT" so no initiating pump, screen nothing. i had a whole nother unit and replaced it and shes running great! I didnt realize the potential of what could have happend till i went to bed last night.

been a bit since an update,
was held back by a stupid little clip that holds the clutch fork to the pivot ball. for the life of me, i couldnt get ahold of one. I then came across a whole diff fork with a built in pivot retainer which i had to cut and strengthen so it would fit through the bellhousing. fits perfect.
Engine has been resealed and looked great inside so i didnt feel the need to do a full rebuild. cyl walls looked fine, All lifter surfaces looked brand new, valves and heads very clean. feel pretty good about this one.
My headmen headers wont work, they bind on the front driveshaft.

yo, got a question about my e-fans. Whats the color codes for them? There is a blue, black and green wire. black is ground right? whats the best place to tie into power? do they need to go through a relay or anything? can i just run them constant on?
thanks guys
Tink, sorry i posted in your messages, shoulda posted here first off...
Sorry, I keep forgetting to reply!! Because I keep forgetting to look at my wire colors since I don't have internet at home. My bad... I feed mine from the junction block. I have them on a switch though.
vdubvance
06-27-10, 12:50 PM
cool, cool! you would think one of the wires would be red... why are there 3 wires that come outta the fan anyway? is one like a reglatory? like a switch wire?
yeah, i was thinking bout a switch, but theres a way to run it through a theremostat right?
Pretty sure one is for a switch... mine were red, green and black. I'll try to remember to look at it when I get home. If it isn't a t-stat fan, I don't think you can run it through a t-stat, but I don't know that for sure.

damn, we got diff colors. oh well, good ole trial and error.. But thanks! i think my fans were stock. but the wire colors match, also one is about 2 inches shorter than the other one, but they fit perfectly!
I didnt know there was a difference. I always thought a t-stat was just a switch.

YO! sorry it been awhile.. some mud thick drama lately. every things going on and everyone needs to friggin relax. The worlds going to hell, what can you do?
Anyways im stuck. i have myself this haynes s10 manual. and to be frank... the diagrams suck....
in the book; WHT, PPL/WHT, TAN/BLK, BLK/RED going to the distributer box, from there it goes PNK, WHT, NCA to the ignition coil. it tells me nothing about whats positive and grounds and such.
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab226/vdubvance/HPIM0502.jpg?t=1281289488
all the Og, wiring in the truck is intact and worked perfectly before the swap, From the main harness there is a green and a light blue lead that the manual says are injectors "injectors for the carb? like a cold start injector?"
a thick pink or red with black stripe that goes to a connector and a thick black lead that goes to a connector then out again to the pink with black connector.... so i need to find whats hot in run, probably a thicker one, that goes to positive of coil. is the big black a ground for the coil?
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab226/vdubvance/HPIM0504.jpg?t=1281289488
i also have a haynes for 67 through 87 chevy that on the 77-80 v8 ign diagram; it has the neg side of the coil grounding to the frame, and a positive going to the base of the dist.
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab226/vdubvance/HPIM0503.jpg?t=1281289488
so the black lead on the bottom of the dizzy is a positive?
i just shorted somthin in one of my beemers, so im being a little cautious about this. any help would greatly be appreciated.
on a side note, talapia makes for great catfish bait!

You have a carb, so you could always run a mechanical/vacuum advance old style HEI...
Like this one.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SBC-BBC-CHEVY-350-383-SUPER-65K-HEI-DISTRIBUTOR-6500-R-/350375962513?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories
Simple one wire hookup. Two wires if you have a tach.
What year was that Blazer? You are planning to run the points dizzy? Does it have a resistor wire? I agree with 4.3CPI, might be a good idea to switch to a big cap HEI. Looks like you have plenty of room.

Thanks guys. Will deff do. just later. I need to hear this thing run!!! i know it runs with this setup... i just gotta hear it...
I think i will have clearance issues with that. isnt the remote dizz almost an inch smaller in diameter compare to the stock combination one? and dosent the ebey add say its alittle bigger than that one? i was having issues with the vacuum advance clearing on mine. you can see where i was beating my firewall, and where i gave up after i almost broke my finger... might have cuz its still fubar.......or chipped my knuckle...
do i have this right?
I need a "power in run" going to the positive side of my coil.
the neg side of coil grounds to frame?
dose the points lead go to positive?
The big cap HEI is much bigger... I orginially didn't think I'd have clearance for it either... I did not notice the vacuum advance clearance... my vaccum advance sits on the other side of the intake on mine.
I'm assuming you are using the S10's wiring?
The points system has two wires running to the coil + side, one is the resistance wire I mentioned earlier... my 69 Nova has that... it provides reduced voltage to the coil while the engine is running. The other wire originates from the starter R terminal (the #6 stud furthest from the engine block on the starter solenoid). This wire provides full battery voltage to the coil during cranking only. The wire from the distributer hooks up to the coil - side. This is how my Nova was wired before I changed to the Pertonix kit.

updates..
installing the clutch master was pretty straight forward. had to re drill, and fab the actuating arm. also weld a stud to the pedal. I was not able to drill out the stabilizing arms that go from the pedal assembly to the bolts on the master that keep it from moving. So im gonna grind the ends of the stabilizers clean and weld directly to the tops of the bolts. This will keep the master and the pedal assemblys as one unit. this should work until i have access to a plasma cutter and can fab myself a bracket. the actuating rod is a piece from the stock s10 master, a 1/2 deepwell socket and nut welded tight.

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab226/vdubvance/HPIM0517.jpg?t=1282835543
the clutch works but its a very short and stiff push. any ideas on how i could do some kind of assist? ok... now im thinking simple machines, leavers and how they work. ive changed the geometry of the pedal lever.... im still doing most of the work by pushing down pretty much right on top of the master... if the pivot point of the actuator was higher up, i would have more of a lever to work with. the catch of all this, the angles of the new and stock masters. the s10s angled down. the wilwoods straight...
The carb i had wasn't getting fuel. I pulled the filter off and this gigantic helicoil just disintegrates as i removed it. so i got a holley off a guy up the road. im unsure of the size of the carb. When i went to all the parts stores last night, none of the double pumper fuel rails seemed to line up. The closest one was 3/4" too long.... Home depot to the rescue!

Damn. felling so discouraged. I got her running great, all timed in and feeling good about that, but i got a leak coming from the freeze plug behind the starter. when i was resealing the motor, i went around and gave em all a tap. i prolly messed the seal up on that one.
And my clutch dont work. the clutch fork that came in the blazer was a old style luk fork that i broke the retaining clip to and couldn't find a replacement for. I then bought a new clutch fork for a 73 blazer. the one thats pressed steel and has the retainer riveted on. well that one didn't fit through the opening of the bell housing, so i cut it down and reinforced. but it dosent move enough to disengage the clutch. the prospect of having to drop that tranny really chaps my ass. so right now im looking for that clip. I've sent emails to a clutch and tranny guy on ebay, and novac industries, see where that gets me. do you guys got anything? the clutch fork retaining clip for a 71 blazer, sm465. Is that what i should be calling it? lol, spent 20 mins at autozone one day, having this girl look for a temperature sending unit, then she ask's the manager and hes like "you mean the temperature switch?" I much prefer mechanical clutch linkage to hydraulic... I could get pictures of the set-up on my old 83 S10 with a mechanical clutch. I think you have less chance of an issue with the mechanical linkage.... when the slave cylinder on a hydraulic clutch go it isn't a whole lot of fun.

09-02-10, 02:37 AM
Well ive been thinking about the torque flex, and the engine mounts for the 71 blazer are less than an inch thick pad of rubber and a steel plate that bolts to the block. I might get less flex out of these than the "steel pin floating in a rubber donut mounts" but i dont know, gonna see what happens.
got my exhaust on, well, straight pipes on anyway. neighbors love me..... but carbs acting up.she starts up great, idles a few seconds then dies. unless i keep feathering gas. floats stuck? ive been hearing that the holly 4011's are a ***** to rebuild. and im thinking the 750 is way more carb than i need. so holley 4011 anyone? got a guy at work with a freshly factory rebuilt edlebrock, gonna see bout that one Friday.
clutch feels awesome! perfect engagement, had to lengthen the pedal side rod, and mounted to the og pivot of the pedal. it feels like the clutch return spring is giving more resistance than the pressure plate. downside is, i had to cut a bigger hole in my firewall. going at it with a hacksaw blade with an electrical tape handle for an hour doing some weird arm contortionist crap cuz im too damn lazy to pull my pedal cluster out....
anyways its done, and im friggin stoked. soon .. damn soon...

Lol "from the store, to the car, to the shelf, to the car", How my buddys neighbor described this little carb. all i did was put it on. she started right up. got the carb almost new off a coworker, he used it for a few weeks while he was having another rebuilt. the holley im selling as parts on ebay.
It feels like my birthday! im insured, and was driving around last night. i got my wish too.. it was raining! 1st gear is friggen monster! I really dont plan on doing much to the motor, i like what she has now. and if i did, it really wouldnt matter much cuz my trans is geared so low. to me, for a truck,,, she hauls balls.. my power steering, power brakes, and clutch are smooth as hell. man ive been waiting for yesterday for a long time...
The freeze plug was a breeze.. dropping the starter was more of a pain in the ass than the actual job. Today i need to set up the mufflers ive got... I felt like such an asshole pulling into my neighborhood at 11:00 last night with the straights on.
Prob # 1. lighting... when my headlight switch is in the off position, the tail lights are dimmly light and flicker. you turn on the headlights, the headlights come on, but no tail or parking lights. i also have no turn sigs. I didnt mess with any of the stock s10 light wiring and im pretty sure i didnt pinch anything. any ideas? also when i go to kill it. she runs on for 5 or six seconds.
On the lighting, is it a ground issue? The taillights have a seperate ground from the headlights...
On the run-on issue, is it running normally or 'dieseling'?
vdubvance
09-08-10, 10:52 AM
cool, thanks tink. i had the rear ground wire mixed up with one of the plate lights.
the running on issue.. ill kill the key, and she runs normally for 5 or 6 seconds then cuts.
and then sometimes she will kill perfectly.. also its hard to start when shes hot.
Damn, yesterday, i left the house going out the back road "effed up back county road" And the truck dies out on me about a mile down. i determine im not getting gas, so i walk back and get a gas can, walk back, try to start and kill the battery.
i then walk back again with the battery, charge it and eat lunch, walk back and after messing with it, determine the fuel pumps dead. I then had to wait a few hours for my buddy to get off work and bring me a new pump. fun stuff....
When shes running good, holy crap im having a blast, the pull that this truck has is insane! My 4x4 engages well. my exhaust is on, now my power steering pump annoys me. its loud.. i dont have many rattle's, no thuds on hard compression, Im running a average water temp of 210 at idle, drops to around 200 on highway, oil pressure reads 38. and shes straight as an arrow at highway speeds. and quite a few people turn their heads.
alright constructive criticism, give it to me. the bad thoughts rolling in your heads. "you should have done this" or "you should have done that", "this is ugly", "fix this",
anything and everything, let me hear it.. now that i have a working platform, and the impatience of having her running is gone, can start with the really fun stuff! Pimping ze auto!

It is the Baja's GOOD twin... trust me, the Baja is the EVIL one! ;)
the running on issue.. ill kill the key, and she runs normally for 5 or 6 seconds then cuts.
and then sometimes she will kill perfectly.. also its hard to start when shes hot.
Are you running an electric or mechanical fuel pump? Could have been the fuel pump causing the issue of run-on if it is electric...
As BigTruckDrivah said, dieseling is caused by timing... but if it is not diesling, it may be the fuel pump (if it is electric) or possibly wiring to the dizzy/coil.

cool! thanks big money and truckdrivah! My neighbor couldn't find his time light, so i have a buddy across town, was gonna stop by on my way in to work tonight. yeah the video was the first time i got her idling, before any tuning. ive just been going by ear..
BigTruckDrivah
09-08-10, 11:25 AM
IIRC, your timing should be 7-8 degrees? Tink probably knows. If its vac advance be sure to unplug it before you set the timing. Idle should be around 800 RPM. The electric pump could be keeping running too.

You gunna hang them mufflers?
vdubvance
09-08-10, 11:29 AM
The fuel pump is electric, i have it going to the same accessory as the fans right now. i was concerned about wiring my fans to a switch, because i might forget to turn them on. My brother was saying that its not good to have my fans on while cranking, so im thinking bout a racing switch with a cover, and wiring it so you have to flip the switch up to kill the fan before you start. start the truck, then flip the cover back down to turn the fans on. Ill work on that here in a bit..
Ok with the coil, theres no ground going to the coil, When i hook a ground to the neg side of the coil.. i get no spark whatsoever.. "wow, according to the spell check, "whatsoever" is a word..." anyways, so yeah theres no ground on the coil..

You gunna hang them mufflers?
they are hung, just working with the straight bends that ive got, a little while down the road ill sink some good money into them. but for now they work. By hung, im assuming the rubber shock dampeners that hang from the frame? yeah they're on. big big difference from the straight pipes. now i got the balls to open her up, was tripping the other day, thought she was gonna blow at 3k rpms....

well, shes driving great! im loving it. I get mad looks going down the road..
I was at autozone lastnight when this little honda civic riceburner car "club" all pull up, revving out like its fast and furious, smirking at me and talking ****. "redneck piece o ****" Screw them, i can do what they do through mud... i had an idea on how to route my exhaust. push the tips out in front of the rear tires, so i can pull up next to the little bastards and blow their hats off...
oh gawd, im having a blast in this truck..

vdubvance

i was thinking bout mounting the tool box and then build a diamond grate step up. do like a semi flat bed that follows the kickups. then between the toolbox and kickups have that as a little cargo area. frame it off. then when push comes to shove, if i ever get the glass bedsides, go from there.

the seats are out of a ranger. They came uninstalled in the blazer. I cut the mounts off, cut the track off the bench seat of the s10. so it moves as one piece like the og bench seat. I like em. and the handy little center console.
I did a post the other day talking bout equal flow exhaust, must have did the preview and then navigated away from the page....
Equal flow is better on anything. Volkswagen engines love equal length headers. When the pipes arnt equal, the cyls that the longer pipes are on have to work harder than the lesser pipes resulting in different temperature's and an unequal work load. And yeah, the rams horns are often found on 70's vettes.
If you ever get the chance, look at the headers of a porsche 911, looks like a bowl of spaghetti up under that apron. Yeah, they are all equal.

WOOT! Back on the road. took me all day, but got the luk clutch in, and its awesome! I guess its the right angle and length cuz it feels like a factory clutch!:) who woulda thunk it?
Any ways, it was a *****, but not as bad as i was expecting. Pulled the starter, rear driveshaft, set a floor jack under the tranny cross member, pulled the 6 bellhousing bolts, and then the 12 trany support bolts. I left the front driveshaft connected. Then using the jack, the whole trans slid back 3 inches all easy like. That gave me just enough room to switch out the fork.
the old fork was bent at such an angle that i couldn't get it out the opening, so i had to cut it in half with a dremel. the new one just popped right in.
Guess thats a handy procedure for changing out the clutch.

some people give me **** about the wheels sticking so far out "just dosent look right" or "looks like a mexican thing" then i point out "a jeep without fenders would look the same way" Fenders are in progress, will be awhile before i get it right.

I took the tool box off, and after about 3 days of my dirtroad pounding the **** out of her, my welds started braking at the tops of the bedsides. Looks like when i chopped it, i left out a major support and the tool box was what was keeping it straight! Pulling the sides didnt help anything either. So i'm bedless right now...

the more i look at that rear frame, the more 4-linking with some coil over shocks appeals to me, then just float the bedsides and build a diamond plate cargo bay.

Engine side, the leads that go to the temp sender switch. i worry bout the accuracy of the mechanical temp gauge. feels discrepant.

Thanks Tink, I do too. A promising buyer came and test drove her, I had to fight back a tear watching it roll out my driveway. First time I have seen anyone driving her from the outside. such a cool little truck... I will surely miss her.
Dreaming up the lifted 2nd gen s10blazer or 1st gen prerunner, lots of time to think about it, but I will end up with another dime someday!
