View Full Version : Factory tach swap
My 99 does not have a tach in the factory guage cluster. Since Im not really a big fan of the painted ones or the white ones that are after market, how hard would it be to swap in a factory guage cluster with the tach on it?

Just find one with a tach if im not mistaken.Yours has the input for one even if your guages didn't originaly come with a tach.Don't know if it has to be the same year or not though.

it will not plug right up and work though ........plenty of people have tried this . i 'll see what i can find .
Sweet I would appreciate that greatly. Ive looked around and I cant find **** for it. Id like to put aftermarket ones in but I hate the colored ones or flame or white ones. Id really just like to put escalade ones in those look the best. I think the monster tachs are kinda gaudy and are only for certain applications. And pillar pods are not that appealing either.
I have a 1996 GMC Sonoma 2.2 liter. I just got a factory gage set with tack from E Bay. I did not have a tack ether. When I got it all I had to do is swap them out. The tack works and everything.

I thought that was all you had to do was install it.now if you have a older S10 with mechanical gauges it won't be that easy.
For me, it was as simple as plugging in one I fond off of Ebay. Everything works, no problems. Tach works fine, as does the speedometer.
I have a '98 w/ 4.3 and the donor gauge cluster was from a wrecked '99. I had NO issues switching them out.

ive always heard issues with the 98's to 99+ because of the databus changes...
mine was plug and play as well, dont know what the cluster was out of, but try to get the same engine/trans combination for the donor cluster.
Mine was out of 1995 and I put it in my 1996. Both were 2.2 liter 5 speeds. plug and play.

I guess I got lucky.

We bought a brand new gauge cluster for our 99' 2.2L 5-speed that had the tach. The stock one was the basic cluster with the crazy "shift" light. Plugged it in, programmed the mileage and it's worked perfect ever since. Still has that crazy "shift" light even with the tach. Just haven't pulled the bulb yet. So far one of the most useful upgrades.
My 96 blazer 4x4 has the the standard cluster.will the Tach cluster out of a 2wd pick up have all the necessary idiot lights (blazer specific)or at least provisions for them? also where should the yellow and red line start for a w code 4.3
