well I bought a 85 blazer with auto well the guy would start it before I got there everytime so it would start right away. well the day after i bought it i went out to start it and the only way to get it to start is to hold the pedal to the floor while cranking for a minute or more.then once it try's to fire the only thing keeping it going is the starter untill it start's to sputter real bad and thats when I can let off the key. once that happens it will still take another 30 sec or so before it will idol without my foot on the floor. but once it starts and warms up I can start it right up all i want no problem.now when I rev the engine up it will backfire and to me that sounds like a timing issue? also if i leave it sit for an hour or so then it will give me crap starting again just not as bad like when it sits over night.
anyways anybody think they can help me out?
thanx steve

i just went through hell and back with my carb. id be more than happy to share any knowlege and experience i have. had exact same problem when i bought my blazer. BEFORE U DO ANYTHING CHANGE UR FUEL FILTER. once uve done that try to start it and see what it does. before staring it take off ur air filter so u can see ur choke. push the gas pedal all the way to the floor and release it. this should put ur choke in the high step of the cam therefore closing the choke completely. if it doesn't ur problem is probably the choke. if it does start ur vehicle. try first without giving any gas, if it doesn't fire up give it gas. from u innitially pressing to the floor there should already be feul in the carb. once uv'e started it watch ur choke. it should open slowly as the engine heats up.
the filter will be right at the back of the carb. can be a lil tricky to pull. loosen the fuel line all the way but dont attempt to take out until u take the bigger fitting out.
the choke cover will be right above the fuel line, I LEARNED THIS THE HARD WAY. DONT TAKE IT OFF TO GET TO THE LINE. its a black cap with an electrical connection to it. u can pull the wire just dont take off the cover. its has a spring inside that u dont want to move.
if u find ur choke is faulty check the wire connection to the choke cover for voltage. should be 12v with the key on accessories.

bad choke pull off alitte vacum can on the carb' you need a real rich mix to get the engine to fire once it starts you don't ' so the pull off opens the choke a little bit

someone can correct me if im wrong but pulling a vaccuum line to start ur truck to me is a temperary fix for ur problem as long as ur vacuum lines r in the right place. i may have misunderstood the post. its possible that u need to adjust ur ide speed screw to richen the mixture but i would double the filter and choke. changing out the filter made a world of difference on my truck.

if that litte can holds vacum you don't have to replace it but adjusting how much it opens the choke should help a lot
