I have just started experiencing a problem with my digital dash (stock). And I am worried that its gonna bite the dust!

Just within the last few weeks the mileage has started to flash. The mileage is 086880. It will alternate from showing 086 to 880 etc. (only showing half at a time.)

Also, without my lights on....I can turn the dimmer switch (which should have no effect) all the way to the left and sometimes the cluster will go off or flash and then go off.

Also, my cd player (which is connected to my dimmer) will flash with my turn signals every once in a while. All of these problems have only happened twice and for only a few seconds.

The only thing new wiring wise is I have installed bixenon HID's, led's all around, and 2 resisitors inline of my front turn signal wires.

Any ideas?

All the connections are good where you added the 2 resisitors inline of the front turn signal wires? Sounds like something is shorting...

I've had the digital dash in my old 91 Blazer go... started with the odometer. I sent it here for repair: http://www.mrwhizard.com/

Yes the connections are good. I know it seems like that must be the problem but there is nothing there that could be shorting that I am aware of. The problem with sending my dash off is that this is my DD.

I can't really afford to have the dash out, sent off for repair, and then reinstalled. Where would be the best place to find a used one? Then maybe I can send it off to have it repaired and swap it out when mine finally goes!?

Update: With the truck running, If I push the brake and turn the dimmer switch (with the lights off) the dash goes crazy. This is only when I push the brake...if I am not on the brake it acts normal.

I thought this might narrow down my list of possible problems.

Any suggestions?

Check Local Junk Yards/Ebay/Craigslist.

Sounds like a ground issue.

Yeah, I'm gonna trace some grounds tonight and probably put in a new dimmer and headlight switch first.

Thanks for the links!

That may help. Mrwhizard.com is $149 to fix the cluster (including shipping). So I think if I can find someone elses for cheap...I'll buy it and start savin' to have it fixed. Then I could always sell mine!

Have you had any leaking issues, meaning water into the cab around the dash area? Done any wiring through there... run wires out to the engine bay or added a stereo or alarm?

There are grounds right behind the instrument cluster, on top of the steering column... that is where the instrument cluster is grounded. It might be worth the time to pull the instrument cluster and check those.

I have had leaking issues but its mainly on the floor on the passenger side...nowhere near the dash I don't think (interior and carpet is removed...so I'll be able to get a better idea) I have added a stereo but that was a while back and hadn't had any issues till now. The only wire I have ran from the engine bay is for my amp...which is unhooked at the moment.

Thats what I was looking for. I think I'm gonna pull the cluster and replace the dimmer switch this week and see if the issue gets any better.

Thanks!

I replaced both the headlight and the dimmer switch. No change!!!!

The dash dims or goes crazy whenever I push on the brakes or use the turn signal. Funny thing is......if the parking lights or headlights are on....it won't do it.

Any other suggestions?

Or do I just need to rebuild my cluster soon?
