To answer your question, I don't know. In my opinion, if you want to do it on the cheap side, go to autozone and get a set of the $40 lift/lowering blocks and install them. Much easier to do than taking the leaf pack apart...

whats the most block u should run cause its a daily driver but i want to just about scrapin leavel

I would probably go with a 2-3'' block, 2'' will make the truck level (provided the truck is factory height) and a 3'' will make the back 1'' lower than the front.

You can't flip the leaf on a s-series and even remotely have a good ride. I think there is way too much arch and it will sit the frame on the axle.
Get blocks and don't forget to cut the rear bump stop.

what about pulling a leaf, i got the main +1 and an overload
Big Mack Daddy
03-15-10, 07:40 PM
It's been done before but:
1. You will lose significant ride quality
2. You will lose hauling capacity
3. I think it is only the 4 leaf pack you can remove a leaf from.
I say just go with the blocks and save yourself the hassle.

well i dont lissen very well i fliped my springs an got a 5in drop with no blocks so when its all done it'll be 7 drop with a 2in block

Oh we got a new one for our thread
87wildside
03-18-10, 08:10 PM
5" drop?
Hell I got springs from a Z83 truck and they have about a 12-16" arch (i'll take pic in the morning).....so, that being said....
http://smiliesftw.com/x/huge_bs_flag.gif
BTW, a spring flip is when you go from either over to under or the reverse. Either for drop or lift depending on the vehicle...not flipping the god damn springs over.

not the hole pack just 1 to dearch them. So if u got 4 srings in a pack or 3 u take the spring pack apart. Then u take the leaf just under the mono leaf an flip it the oppisit way to form a foot ball shape then bolt them all back together an by doing so it flatins spring to lower them. I use to race dirt track in minis and thats how we us to run them and it worked.
RIDE QUALITY depends on shock prefrence QA1 makes a good one or most aftermarket shocks work :o

Oh dear lord...
I already dont like the way some people lower there vehicles, or even lift them..
But this whole leaf flip thing is new to me...
Why... just why?...
Just seems senseless.
and I dont care if someone has been riding on them for a year...
I agree with that other guy: "Just because you can, doesnt mean you should"
You do this for a cheap drop? If you cant afford the drop, then you cant afford the possible F- ups either... leave it stock, leave it alone until you can do it right

I got bored one weekend and had a few extra springs laying around. I have a set of ZQ8 leaves and they have the straight cut overload spring on the bottom. I needed to remove this for clearance for my caltracs that I am building and trying to keep as high as possible. And since this truck is not a daily driver or will I ever have anything more than a fuel cell, battery, and a nos tank... I really couldn't care about how much weight it can haul. I removed it from the bottom and bolted it to the top of the spring pack. PS you dont need a clamp for the ZQ8s cus they are pretty soft. This was pretty easy with the springs off the truck. This gained me about 1" of extra drop. and stiffened up the spring rate since it was reloading the spring. This is what I needed to achieve out of the soft ZQ8s and a sprayed v8. I also did this with a standard set of original springs and got about an inch more out of those too. If you want to do this nicely you will keep overload leaf that you remove from the bottom and place in on the top the same direction that you removed it. This puts much less stress on the spring ends and does not stiffen the spring pack as much. You will not get 5.5" out of this the way that I did but you will see a drop and stiffen the pack a little. I personally would not build a spring pack with that much stress as Trips did but each to his own. I would like to know how stiff the rear rides with that much counteracting forces. I will try to get pics up some time.

well after reading every ones comment im posting my fliped leaf pic. u decide how it looks. the ride is a little bouncy but not bad.
4 leafs are better but more stiffer then 3
click on pic. makes it bigger

Some of the bounce problem is that your shock is so far out of position it cannt work as designed. You would need a much firmer shock to work at that angle. Is that a drop shock or stock length?
trips10
04-16-10, 06:18 PM
stockers the bounce dont bother me i got a lumber rack to put on so it might take some of it away cause i aint never seen a lowered truck with a lumber rack it sweet

It is sagging because the springs are not meant to support the truck the way they are mounted. That will get worse.
The vibration is prolly because your U-joints are stressed do to the different pinion angle you have now. That will get worse as well.
BTW, you have very little room for the suspension to work as it is; I would not put any weight back there with the springs flipped like that...If I were you.

So far so good? You just blow those 2 issues off like they're no big deal. "so far so good???" More like "So far from good."
I guess the bright side is that with all the money you saved you can afford to buy new pinion bearings, u-joints and a tranny tailshaft bushing after driving around with your pinion angle all fukt up.

Any good posts on the monoleaf or the astro van fiberglass leaf spring conversions? wouldnt they be really bad on spring wrap/wheel hop?
87wildside
05-01-10, 01:29 AM
Well a mono leaf that is designed for it should be better but from what I have read the fiberglass mono leaf isn't very good for anything other then problems. Plenty on it at syty.net.
Have heard of the Astro swap but that was at s10f years ago when mono leaf/ bagged was acceptable.

OK so I finally got some pictures taken of my rearranged leaf spring packs. As you can see the drop in not huge. The shorter ones are ZQ8 springs and the taller ones were stock on my 97 with 4cyl reg cab stepside. I have the modified ZQ8 in now and got about an extra 1"-1.5" drop from them, they are stiffer with less axle wrap and there is more room to tuck the cal-tracs that I am working on building up farther off the ground without hitting the overload spring that was hanging down before.

ive gone 3000 miles an it rides fair. but its a little bouncy an it dont like pot holes. im still running them but id recamend some shims to reajust pinion angle cause its got a vibration in 3rd gear an my pinion seal is starting to leak but its an easy fix
