1987 S-10 Speedometer/odometer troubles

Hi there. Ive got an 87 chevy s10 2.8 4 speed. As of late my speedometer and odometer have completely stopped working. It happened one day this winter when it was pretty much as cold as it gets here in olympia wa. Now i can live with the speedometer not working (and have for about 3 months) but i definately need the odometer to work for maintenence reasons. I've been searchin around for a while and havent found any solid info on fixing this problem most of the info seems to be about fixing the ones that use an electronic speed sensor instead of the cable? Hell im not even sure if mine has a speedometer cable and i just dont know where to start. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yours has a cable. Its pretty simple.

First what I would do is unhook it from the transmission tail shaft and see if the cable turns. If it turns then hook a drill to it and on reverse I think see if the speedo works.


I hope for your sake its not a 4x4 and the driven/drive gears went out like they did on mine.
