Chevrolet Malibu SS /Malibu Maxx SS -With DaimlerChrysler affixing SRT badges to what seems like every other vehicle in its Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep lineups, GM has obviously decided that it’s time to liven up its Chevrolet brand with a plethora of SS emblems. SS, which stands for “Super Sport,” has been a Chevy tradition since 1961, when it appeared on the sheet metal of an Impala. Now, 44 years later, the SS name is being affixed to a pair of Malibus, the standard four-door sedan and the five-door Malibu Maxx, which features a six-inch-longer wheelbase yet is slightly shorter overall in length than the sedan. Both the Malibu SS and the Malibu Maxx SS feature a new 3.9-liter V-6 with variable valve timing, a power plant that serves up 240 horsepower and 241 pound-feet of torque. The large displacement of the V-6—achieved with 99-mm offset bores and an 84-mm stroke—delivers 90 percent of peak torque from 1800 to 5800 rpm. The sole tranny is a Hydra-Matic 4T65-E four-speed with manual shift mode and adaptive shift control. Naturally, both Malibu SSs ride on a sport-tuned suspension that includes stiffer springs, specially valved struts and shocks, and larger front and rear anti-roll bars. Two tire choices are available: an all-season 225/50R18 and a “summer only” performance 225/50R18. Larger four-wheel disc brakes—11.7-inch vented front discs and solid 10.6-inch rear discs—with standard ABS provide able stopping power. Since they’re Super Sport cars, the two Malibus sport SS-specific ebony interior trim with gunmetal accents, new sport seats with larger bolsters, and a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather-covered shifter knob. Outside, SS-specific front and rear fascias, larger grille openings, projector beam fog lamps, a rear spoiler, monochromatic exterior moldings and trim, and dual chrome-tipped 3.5-inch exhaust outlets differentiate the SSs from lesser Malibus. Four exterior colors will be offered when the cars go on sale this fall: white, black, blue, and silver.

first line is pretty much what i thought...now chevy is slapping SS on everything. this one was not necessary...SS Monte Carlo, SS Impala, SS Trailblazer, SS Silverado, SS Colorado (maybe) they are going crazy...anything with SS should be at least 300hp...what next SS Aveo...SS HHR

As far as what can be done to the Malibu it looks good (nice and clean). I don't like the Maxx.

They are doing what Fords SVT and Dodge's SRT programs are doing.Putting a spin on every vehicle in the line up they can.But it seems Dodge actually puts more punch in to the power section of their program over Ford and Chevy.I think they look decent.Nothing great but look at the SVT Focus. It looks like a wanna be Civic to me.

The SS badge should be reserved for the very special vehicles. I kind of like the car but it doesn't deserve the SS.

Back in the day (late '60s thru early '70s). SS meant that Nova, Camaro, Chevelle, etc had a mean, high-output 327, 350, 396/402, 427 or 454 which translated to "whoa." Now, SS translates to "oh." :o
