View Full Version : Buick Turbo in a Jimmy
I just wany to throw out a question. Has anyone considered putting a 3.8 turbo from a t-type, regal, or GN into a jimmy or s10? I did a search but could not find anything on here. I figure there is plenty of room for the engine. There should not be an overheating issue with the stock radiator. The only problems I can see are motor mount fabrication, accessory belt routing, oil pan modifications and transmission adaptors. I am considering the swap for my 94 jimmy 4WD. Your responses are welcome good or bad.

Clifford Performance made swap mounts to put the Buick 3.8 into a S-10 at one time. Couldn't find it on their site, looks like they cut back a lot.

I have seen the GN swap on the net but in a 2wd.
I say for the amount of money involved with the 3.8 swap just turbo a 4.3. Yeah it's not something new or different but at this point there isn't much new or different that can be done to a S-10. Hell, I've seen picks of one with tank treads.
I have a 400 small block I thought of putting in my jimmy but I have heard so much about the overheating problems I was thinking of somethng smaller and lighter.

Why? They are still junk after putting $20,000 into them. It's just a big engine. There is a reason they crowd the junk yards. The Olds and Buick 455's put out more TQ stock and are much stronger and, though limited, aftermarket support. Hell, a Buick 455 is only 35 lbs heavier then a SBC if IIRC.

For 1970 Cadillac fitted a crankshaft with a 4.304 in (109.3 mm) stroke, increasing total displacement on the engine to 500 cu in (8.2 L). At introduction it was rated at 400 hp (298 kW), SAE gross, and 550 lb·ft (746 N·m) of torque. For 1971 compression was reduced from 10:1 to 8.5:1, the lowered compression ratio dropped the 500's gross output (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower#SAE_gross_horsepower) from 400 brake horsepower (300 kW) to 365 brake horsepower (272 kW), or 235 horsepower (175 kW) in the new SAE net (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower#SAE_net_horsepower) ratings. By 1976, its final year, it had fallen to 190 horsepower (140 kW). However, a new Bendix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bendix_Corporation) electronic fuel injection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_fuel_injection) system was offered as an option, and it increased power output to 215 hp (160 kW). The 500 was exclusive to the Eldorado until 1975 where the powerplant was standard in all Cadillacs except for the Seville, which was powered by a fuel-injected Oldsmobile 350 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldsmobile_V8_engine#350).
i only mentioned it cause i saw a 1969 Cadillac Coupe DeVille at the junk yard today that had a 472 in it.
I figured the power to weight ratio of a buick engine would be awesome. Modding an S10 to fit a cadallac engine would take a lot of fab work.

My V8 swap runs cooler than my 4.3 . And the V8 has the stock V6 rad. with some cheapo hayden fans. A 3.8 turbo swap would be cool. Already done or not I say go for it, everyone has a 350.
