what does it do? or tell me? why would i need or want one?

A pyrometer is a temperature measuring device. Common application for us is exhaust temp.

If you were running alcohol and wanted to tune for max power you could use one. Other than that I don't see where you would.

Best tuning tool as far as exhaust is a wideband O2 sensor.

it's mostly used with turbo deisel aplications so you don't overheat you ****.

There's also tire and brake pyrometers. They are usually the same gauge that has different scales for either the brakes or tires. These are not needed on the street but would come into play if you did autocross or road raced the truck.

I use an infrared for tires and brakes. And a lot of other things. A real bargain nowadays compared to what I paid for mine (when they first came out). $100 will get a decent one.
