Can anyone tell me if the transfer case from a Typhoon/ Syclone is the same as the ones used in the GMC Safari/Chev Astro vans?

The 2WD Astro Van V8 mounts will not work with the All-Wheel Drive Astro Van. The All-Wheel-Drive Astro Van uses a Borg-Warner 4472 transfer case. It is a full-time four-wheel-drive transfer case that is also used in Oldsmobile Bravada, and in the All-Wheel-Drive S-10 Blazers. It was also used in the GMC Syclone and Typhoon Sport Trucks, which had 280 horsepower turbocharged and intercooled 4.3 V-6 engines. The transfer case will handle the power of 350 V-8.

Also

The All-Wheel-Drive Astro Van uses the same front differential as a 4x4 S-10 Truck

Thanks for the great info----- I have been thinking of converting my 4-door S-10 from regular 4WD to AWD and am looking at a turbo in the near future so I figured if it would hold up in the Syclone it would be good for my application as well.

I also remember something about the AWD front axle being iron instead of alum. But Im not sure, maybe only certain years or something.

As michel (Mikz86TA) stated, they are the same, and as Marc (Blaze_X)also mentioned, yes the sy/ty have an iron front diff....they can also be fond on manual trans ZR2 pickups, pickups only though. They both use the BW 4472 t-case, although, to my knowledge there were never any AWD s-series made, besides the bravada and the sy/ty (syclone/typhoon); which I know are the only ones that used an AWD t-case and the only exception being the AWD astro van. Late.

I thought there were some 98-up S-series SUV's that had the Auto 4wd along with Hi and Lo. Wouldnt that still be considered a AWD since it can be used full-time?
Maybe I didnt see that but swear I have

From what I understand that "Auto" setting is not a AWD, it is only when the computer senses wheel slip, like an ABS system but for the drivetrain instead of for breaking.

And I know no one believes me on this one and thats fine cus I wouldn't either. But my friend had a 97 blazer, 4.3 auto 4door, and it was AWD. It had the sticker on rad. support saying "do not dino on a 2wd dino, AWD vehicle" and everything. No push button switches for 4x4 or anything. Now Im not saying that someone couldn't have done some swapping or changed the body before he bought it from a used car lot but I saw it with my own eyes.

So would I want to change the front diff in my S-10? If I understand correctly then the Astro's had an iron front diff? If so would this or one from a Bravada be what I would want?

Get a front Iron diff with a gear ratio that matches your current set and transfer case and I think the front drive shaft too from a AWD bravada, or astro/safari. Then you will be set.
