View Full Version : Brights don't work unless column is tilted...

OK, so this is on my 91 Camaro, but the steering columns are exactly the same so, I was wondering if anyone may have run into this problem... the brights are on ALL the time and you can't click them off - the stalk won't 'click' UNLESS you have the column tilted all the way down. Then the brights work normally. I've been running around with them unplugged (Camaros have entirely seperate bright sealed beams), but inspection is due next month.

Planning on taking it apart tomorrow, but I just thought I'd see if anyone has ever run into a similar problem or has any thoughts.

Sounds like the multi function switch to me.

Aren't the brights actuated by a rod like the ignition switch? Maybe the switch needs to be adjusted.

No, they are in the multi function switch. Bet there are some bare wires at the column tilt.

I would just drop the column to a point it works and pull the adjustment stalk.

I agree ...I don't believe this style column has a multi-function switch. What it does have is a rod running down the side of the column that connects the directional/hi-low beam lever to the hi-low beam switch. The switch is adjustable by loosening the mounting bolts and sliding the switch up or down the column. In this case it sounds like you are not getting enough "throw" and need to slide the switch up closer to the lever.

This should be identical to the column I installed in my dad's hotrod last year. I cropped one of the interior pics so you can see the lever, rod and switch. Because the column is visible in the hotrod everything was painted black to try to make it all blend in, but if you look closely you can see the individual components.

Hope this helps!!! :D

That will be the first thing I check... I looked at an old S10 column I had, so I can see where the issue might be with that switch. Now I've just got to deal with working in that tight floor board of that Camaro... :rolleyes:

That was all it was - good call. ;) Took me 1/2 hour... I did have to drop the column for easier access. Just loosened up the bolts, slid the switch up and it was good to go. Now I've got a bright and a regular light out, so I just got back from NAPA with the lights.

Let me take this chance to scream at the top of my lungs, "I KICK BUTT"! lol jk.

I still need to readjust my ignition switch so people other than me can actually start the truck (o;

I was positive it was in the MF switch.

Sorry for the bad info :( Glad it's fixed.

LOL, I can't fix my own stuff, it just makes my day when an idea I have actually works for someone.

I'm just thrilled that I didn't have to take apart the steering column.... although, if I had pulled that airbag steering wheel it would not have gone back on!
