Some of you remember my latest project (454/4L80E from a Suburban). Anyway, converter wound up being junk (left the line at about 900 rpm's) and shifting into overdrive at the 1/8 seems to hurt it. Best ET of 12.48 with a 1.75 60'. ALWAYS a 1.75! Running it through the program shows 4th gear to be very inefficient. The 5.13's with the 29.5 MT cross the stripe at about 5200 in 4th at 108 mph.
Anyway, put the 4.56's in and a 2500 stall converter. Any guesses on new ET and MPH? Sparky sez 12.15 @ 111. Not bad for a 200,000 mile Vortec 454 eh?
Also gonna make a full nitrous pass with a 125 dryshot. I'll do that pass first during the day. Gonna be 47 degs. tomm night! Maybe an 11.25?

ARGGGHHH!!!!!!! I know better, I know better, I know better! And did it anyway. What? 2 changes at once. 60 ft .05 better but mph down a bunch (2 mph). Definitely launching harder but I think the gear hurt me. Don't know. Gonna put 4.88's back in and see. Open comp night tonight (.500 pro-tree, deep stage) so I only made one normal pass (went out 3rd round w/.016 breakout). Did manage a screwed up nitrous pass of 11.58@111.7
Bright side? The 4L80E is the sheot. Hammers 4th gear shift just like the first 2. The extra 100 lbs. is costing me a tenth but the benefit of being able to run low gears seems to offset the extra weight. I think replacing the 4.56's with the 4.88's will help the 60' even more. OD doesn't seem to be as inefficient as I thought it was. Just hoping I don't have an inefficient converter. We'll see.

DAMMITT!!! Just going over my notes I realized I left the 5.13 gears in the program when I ran with the 4.56's.
Any guesses on the effect? Reckon I'll leave the 56's in 'til I test Weds. night.
Man I feel stupid some times...........

No weds. test and tune, Cub Scout meeting. Guess I'll run the next points race with the 56's. Get some good data and then change.

Hmmm..... another 12.48 at about 1200 ft. higher DA. Same 60' also. So, picked up maybe a tenth. Shifted into 4th 'bout 150 ft. from the stripe. Prolly gonna split the difference and put the 4.88's in.
Might race the Blazer this weekend. National Dragster Challenge. Race the street class with it.

Sounds good. Gonna be smokin' hot that time of year so we'll be looking at the slowest et's ever. DA usually around 3000.

Sounds like a sweet car Mr.Frosty. I'd like to put a 454 in my blazer sometime in the future when the 4.3 takes a ****.

The guy that lives across the road from my parents has a 454 SS and it hauls. I want to put a 350 in my truck so bad I can't stand it.
Thanks JROD. Thinkin' on puttin' it in my 85 S-10 eventually.

lol...a 454 s-10..hmmm...you will need...parachute...solid gold body components (for density) 15" brembo discs...and an eject lever on the driver side seat...passenger well...fock 'em...
that would be bad ass though...i think the most powerful engine i've seen in an s-series is the twin turbo sonoma...well there was that guy with the 572...*shrugs...

Weighed the Chevelle. 3040 lbs. without me. I'm 180-185 so my race weight is 3220.
Trans. ain't the greatest for consistency purposes. When I got the new converter in shipping weight said 73 lbs. Without the 6 qts. of fluid it holds. 13" in diameter. jeez...
Trans. itself is 150 or so. I can drop better than 100 lbs. and some godawful reciprocating mass by going to a powerglide or TH350. Gotta be worth .3-.5 ET.
Pride wanted the combo. to work. Pride also likes winning and is used to it. Not sure I can satisfy both.
Anybody want a built to the hilt 4L80E with 2000 stall converter?
Random thoughts. Responses welcome.

I've got the Powerglide in my Chevelle, I like it but with the taller gears you better put in new gears in the rear and have at least 600hp.

It'll have either 4.33's or 4.10's in it. Monte Carlo I drive has 383/pg combo with 400 rwhp. Runs 10.80's.

Well, just damn. Put a cold/ram air tube on and it ran a 12.39 tonight ON THE BRAKES! Yup, 3rd round break out, I was dialed 47 (it's a long story). Would've run a 32-33. Usually goes through the traps at mid 107 mph.
My first pass (in the heat) was a full nitrous pass. 11.57@114.78 WoW!
Maybe it's time to put a cold air intake on the Blazer. duh.........

Well, here's the rub. As it sits, it ain't a good bracket car. At all. Gonna get parked for a while and I'm gonna get back on the Blazer. MAF is just too damn finicky, 4L80E too heavy and not enough stall, using OD to race =3 shifts (2 more than a powerglide). It was a cool project but with undesired results. Dammit. Happens sometimes. Maybe stick it in the 85 S-10 or Chevy 2 for a street ride? Who knows.
The Blazer's gonna go land speed racing at ECTA. That's the focus for now.

how fast were you expecting that thing to run. 11.57 isn't exactly slow you know. compared to my 15.499.

No, speed isn't the issue, consistency is. A bracket car needs to be predictable. The Blazer last year had 2 wins, 3 runner ups and a slew of semi-final showings. I knew as the weather changed, what it was gonna run. The Chevelle, with many more variables, is very unpredictable.
Last night, DA started at 1700 ft (100.3 % relative hp) and ended up at 700 ft. (101.8% rel. hp). Should have picked up 'bout .15 secs. Picked up .35 and it wasn't a linear change. Hard to read.

There's the time slip. Maybe the last for that combo.
