Well My lifters are ticking on the passenger side of the engine, got some atf in the oil and some seafoam going to let it run and hopefully unfree the lifter but i'm curious, i'm sure i'll be tearing something down soon, short of a complete refresh, what indicators that the paticular lifter is shot, i'll be looking with the intake manifold off the engine.

i dont think you'd see an indicator if an exhaust lifter is stuck on the intake tract side...

your not going to see much really, other than more than normal valve lash at TDC for the specific cylinder.

I'm just going to replace all the lifters at once, the valves and such are in decent shape, havn't inspected the cam yet,
Jay remember this is the same engine that was Marked in my other posts, "RTV FUN" and they went crazy with the Rtv red, i'll post up some pics we all can laugh some more.

im willing to lay bets that there is a piece of red rtv stuck in the oil passage of one or more of the lifters. This could very well be an on-going issue for you..which isnt good news.

Get a few gallons of diesel fuel. When you have the intake pulled off, pull the drain plug and let all the oil drain. Slide a new drain pan under there when the engine oil has finished draining. Dump a couple gallons of diesel fuel into the valley, and the lifter pockets, and let gravity do its job. This would be a whol;e lot easier to do with the pan off as well, but your getting into a lot of work then.
I use diesel at wotk all the time to flush out engines.
