its an 8MM Mauser, the 8X57 was discontinued after the war as part of the surender weird. The Mauser is microscopic tad larger still its a nice gun at least i like it.

Sigh... ill post better pics wen i can my sister has the digital camera and i have no idea where she is right now

7mm,8mm,and I believe 9mm.The best thing about those is that there is really no collectors value on them, but, the 98 Mauser is a great platform to build many of the 30.06 based wildcat rifles on,such as the 25.06 and many more I can't remember.

The 98 Mauser is probably one of the strongest actions ever made, kind of a toss up between it and the '03 a3 .

strongest or smoothest? i heard the 03 a3 has a stiff action

strongest or smoothest? i heard the 03 a3 has a stiff actionStrongest.my experience with the Mauser was really good, very smooth, the 03a3,as you said was pretty stiff because of a really stiff firing pin spring i think.Since they cock on closing the firing pin spring has a lot to do with it.

eh thats when the arms race was getting into production with the "repeating" type rifles. understandable why they never really probably cared. The enfield I heard was a nice rifle. And held twice the ammo capacity

The metal is in good shape for as old as it is. Do you shoot it often? What are your plans for it? I would re stain the stock. As old as the gun is, its not going to hurt the value because these guns are not that rare to find. Nice gun though.

Actually it looks a little better in person i restored the stock already with Boiled Lin Seed oil (I Dont take it out in the rain) Sadly I cant shoot it very often with the cost of bullets. I only have 23 rounds and its like $40 for a box of 20 heh. Gotta clean and oil it when I took the pictures I noticed the action was stiffer then normal. I do all my plinking with a .22lr. Lol
