View Full Version : Powerwashing the Engine compartment
Ok, I dont really know where this belongs, so it is going here. When I get my little 2.8 paperweight out of my truck I would like to power wash basically everything from the firewall forward. (im pulilng the front clip to make things easy and accessable) Anyone have any tips on what I should or shouldnt do? I had just planned on going crazy with the high pressure water to get all of the grease and old oil (she leaks a little bit) off of the suspension and steering components, as well as the frame arms.
basically regrease all the fittings will never hurt to get the water out. even grease it till grease comes out to help get the water out than just wipe them down to get excesse grease off. everytime i wash my engine compartment (never power washed it just soap and a hose) i reoil things like the hood latch maybe even the hings some times(you'ed be amazed how far alittle oil will go).
and dont go to nuts and blow things apart under. pressure washers have lots of power and will rip wires apart and tear apart rubber things. oh and it will blow paint off to. so be alittle careful.

yeah pretty much what he said..i've done it a few times...basically don't linger in any 1 area too long...
any good cheep degreaser ideas? I figure im gonna have to buy about a case to get the 17 years of **** out of it.
just dont use straight degreaser. my father went to wash something (an old compresser) and sprayed straight degreaser on it well lets just say there was no longer paint in those areas. theres a really good company we get our stuff from called "trans mate" i dont know if everyone can buy there stuff but they have really good products. i'll see if i can find a link.
ok found it. they have really good stuff it basically industrial stuff (stuff that car washes would buy) but its really good stuff. they have degreasers and engine washes
http://www.trans-mate.com/AutomotiveProducts.html
this is the stuff that i use
TM098 - Hi-Shineâ„¢= really good for tires (really oily) but shiney
TM093 - Upholstery Cleanerâ„¢= works good on carpets,seats ect
TM005 - Wash Waxâ„¢=the only thing i've ever used to wash my truck, paint is 2 years old and still shiny as day one
TM084 - Glass Cleaner Concentrate= just works a hell of alot better than any house hold stuff
but sorry i have no clue on prices or where to buy

Oven clear and a wire brush will do wonders. You might also want to paint the frame rails with POR15 while they are assesible this will really make the under hood area look so much better
already plannin on por15ing the frame ralis. I have used power purple and didnt like it. What about some foaming engine brite, will that do the trick?

I used Gunk engine bright when i did mine. It works really well, just dont get it on any pained surfaces. spray that crap on, then use a little brush to get the heavy stuff off and blast it all away. Should look brand new
