View Full Version : Strange noise
hey fellas new to the forum. reason i signed up is for a little help please. when i hit the gas for a second it makes a sort of grinding noise and it almost always does it in the 1500 range (even out of gear). the strange thing is it seems to be coming from behind the dash. not the engine compartment and its not an exhaust leak. i really suspect that its the Tachometer. so what i wanted to do is disconnect it from the coil or distributer whichever it is. could someone post a pic of the wire or connecter i need or if you know the problem help please thanks.

Year, make, model, engine, trans, etc. More info. the better. Some of us have Alldata at home ;).
if you have the newest dash design 00-05 it's common and nobody i've talked to has figured it out yet. my 03 does it too. Yes it drives me nuts sometimes. i thinck it has to do with the cruise control. One of these days I'll find it unless someone figures it out first.
sorry i thought it would post its a 2001 s10 4.3l auto and it does have cruise. well thanks maybe somone knows.
if you find someone who knows what's doing it let us know. I'm not the only one who wants to fix this problem.

Models:

(Plant Codes 8 and K)
1996-2001 Oldsmobile Bravada
This bulletin is being revised to add the 2002 model year, plant codes, and update labor time information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-08-63-001 (Section 08 - Body and Accessories).
Condition
Some customers may comment on a rattle coming from either or both front corners of the instrument panel near the hood hinge areas. This noise may often be mistaken for a loose shock absorber. The rattle may be heard when driving over rough roads and is most noticeable when the road surface creates a side-to-side vehicle motion.
Cause
Excessive clearance at the hood hinge attaching bolt may cause this condition. The excessive clearance allows the hood hinge to make metal contact with the hood hinge bracket, which produces a rattling noise.
Correction
Important :For additional information, see the Body Front End subsection of the Body and Accessories Section of the appropriate Service Manual.
1. Remove the hood hinge attaching bolt (1).
2. Install a spring washer (2) on the bolt as shown in above illustration.
3. Install the bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
Parts Information
Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

Only 2 noise related bulletins I found. Hood hinge seems like a possibility.
i dont know but ill take a look thanks
lets figure out this sound before jumping to conclusions. sounds like a garbage disposale..right?
yeah a garbage disposal is close usually louder when engines cold. i want to disconnect the tach because it seems like its comming from that area and it wont hurt nothing but i dont know what wire it is.
I tryed that already, but was thincking it was the speedo. anywayI pulled the entire gauge pod and it still made the grinding niose. It has to be something in that genrale area because I can't hear it outside the truck. It realy sounds more like a relay. On the older vehicles with the old horn relay when they went bad they would start makeing a simular sound, but as far as I can see the relays are under the hood in the fuse box. I just may not be missing it though.
it's realy got me stumped. and Gm denys that it's a problem so no tech article has been issued on this. the problem i'm haveing is My only does it when I can't stop and look at it and that makes it that much harder to track down. if yours' is doing it constantly like some poeple I talk to try to get a stethiscope on it.
yeah i was thinking about that. man i was hoping it was gonna be something simple i guess not. i also thoght the speedo too but like i said it will do it stoped and out of gear if i just rev it. btw yours is deffinately on the left (drivers side) right?
