hello all, my name is Lee, and i cannot leave well enough alone. My truck is a 1989 S10 reg cab, shortbox 2wd named the Bootleggers Deluxe, or the BLD for short. a quick history on the truck, i bought it 5 years ago as a winter beater, discovered how much fun it was to drive, and decided to do some mods to it. The truck posesses a magical ability to be hammered on relentlessly, does amazing powerslides, and is very similar to driving a go kart at times ... heres a pic of when i first got it ...
http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac287/bootleggersdeluxe/s101.jpg
the truck went through a 2 year transformation, serving as my daily driver ( i had a nicer truck, but this one saw some salt). the name Bootleggers Deluxe spawned from an incident involving the law that in Iowa it is illegal to carry more than two bottles of booze across state lines... no ticket, but an idea was born. soon the truck morphed into this ...
http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac287/bootleggersdeluxe/STA70735.jpg
http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac287/bootleggersdeluxe/STA70783.jpg
Mods incuded buckets, console, woodgrained wheel, and other interior bits, a built 4.3 with cam and headers, a mean 700r4, 2/3 drop, zq8 and Hellwig swaybars, Camaro RS wheels ... i could keep going ... i made it into a nice, reliable, and fun machine that served me well for almost 70,000 miles. (yes, i drive a lot)
The truck was parked due to a rear axle issue, and also the front control arm bushings left and never came back. The truck basically sat, getting moved around from spot to spot, and taken out on a few full throttle spins when i felt frisky. the dealing blow was when my fathers and my shop burnt down last spring, trashing a bunch of parts i had for the truck and melting the Camaro RS wheels to nothing... that brings us up to current events. The truck sat behind my house all winter in a snow bank, but it has recently warmed up to the point that i dug it out ....
http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac287/bootleggersdeluxe/STA70060.jpg
thus begins the new era of owing this truck ...

now, a few things have changed in the direction of BLD. it's first purpose was to provide a nice driver that could possibly be raced on an autocross course. Now the direction has changed to an autocross racer that is streetable enough to drive on the street. I have a specific set of plans that i plan on putting into motion. The ideology is not tearing the truck into a million pieces and do a full restoration, the idea is to do a bunch of smaller projects that will compliment and build off one another. I signed up for 12 autocross events in 2011, i plan on racing the truck on Sunday, and having it back on jackstands Sunday night, moving on with the next step for next weeks race. Larger projects, like the back halfing of the frame, will be saved for next winter, when the snow is deep and the nights are long. but the three ideals that started when i got the truck will still hold through:
1) must be street legal, and streetable enough to drive anywhere, anytime.
2)NO CREDIT CARDS! this is a budget build, as was the first round, so bartering and trading are encouraged...
3)must be able to haul a minimum of 1 case of spiced rum for transport.
outlining all the details would take forever, so just imagine the end picture. Orange truck, white chevelle stripes. 4/5 drop. stock car component suspension, full floater 9 inch rear. 4 link, no bed floor. tonneuo cover hiding all the goods. full interior, roll cage. 5.3/5 speed richmond. 17 inches of stock car steel wheel for the track, modified factory wheels for street duties. Get the picture??

now, onto fixing stuff. First up, wheels and tires. the original RS wheels died in the fire, and the truck was left standing on 14 inch studded snow tires. That wont do. I ended up trading a used rear axle out of a 4x4 83 S10 i parted out for the 96 S10 wheels that are on the truck in the last picture. I wrapped them in 235/60R15's, Firestone Indy 500's. Good well rounded street tire, it will suit me fine in the early stages of the build.
The truck roared to life after it's 6 month nap surprisingly quickly, the 9 year old optima still has juice in it. the truck was driven to my fathers and my shop 6 blocks away. Rear end "issues" consisted of the pinion bearing having so much play that the pinion was walking up the ring gear under heavy acceleration. I did a very butch thing and just replaced the pinion bearing and seal. I would suggest doing a full rebuild to anyone with this problem, but this rearend doesnt need to last long. I didn't take pictures because i didn't want to have a memory of the shame ...
now, i am sitting here, ordering tall lower ball joints, control arm bushings, and moog tie rod ends, center link, idler arm and sleeves, because restoring and rebuilding the front suspension is next on the list. here's a set of parts i already have ...

What 5 speed are you planning on using behind the eventual engine swap? I like this plan by the way.
Bootlegger's Deluxe

Richmond. I looked into other transmissions, but for the price of lacating a 5 speed thats not total trash, then rebuilding it and fighting all the swapping nuances, it's easir to call summit up, order a richmoned 5 speed that you can pick the gear ratios and you know its good for beating on ...
Do you have the other parts yet for changing to manual?

Do you have the other parts yet for changing to manual?
Not yet, i'm planning on running a wilwood master and slave setup, so really all i'll need to locate is the pedal assemblies ... and probably a stock 350 bellhousing ...
Hmmm...I have a 5 speed truck....you want a 5 speed tranny.....and I want a car...lol

So, this weekend marks the beginning of summer, and what is more summer than a hot rod truck??
Saturday i spent an hour in the garage sitting on a milkcrate staring at the truck, and decided it was time to do step one in the trucks "revival" ....
FIXING WHATS BROKE
I started out by swapping the trashed rearend for a rearend i pulled out of a junked out truck. Nothing fancy, just another 3.55 open rear ten bolt ... but it will serve it's duties until i get a proper 9 inch under the truck. I went total cheap and reused all the rear brake shoes and drums and such from the old rearend ... which is actually the same stuff that came on the truck years ago. It's still good enough.
I spent an hour tracking down a coolant leak. I ended up putting on new intake gaskets, and replacing some hoses, and throwing a new thermostat in ... seems to be cured. I also sandblasted the plugs, regapped them ,and looked really hard at the dizzy cap and rotor before i put them back on.
Whats this mean?? It means 27, yes i said 27 ... new patches of rubber scattered through Delhi. and a grin that hasnt worn off yet. And the "wow, thats hot" from my fiance ... yes, the Deluxe has a way of attracting the ladies, dont ask me why.
So, now that theres some semblance of driveabiliy, i can move on to other stuff ... like more fixing what is wrong stuff. The drivers window doesnt roll down, and the tranny lines leak worse than the lake Delhi dam ... that needs fixed badly. i dont want to run another set of lines to the radiator, it never seems to work out right ... im thinking about putting this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DER-13222/ on the framerail and just running lines to it ... thoughts??
so yes, the truck is back on the road, licences and unisured, and still needing front suspension work badly ... more to come!

im thinking of going cheap and cool and getting something like this:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRR-3978834/

You mean without the pulley that replaces the AC condensor? I have one of those that I don't think I need.... If we go 4.3L in Little Blue, it will be V-belts.
BTW, I like the shop logo idea, but I like rat-roddish stuff.

thats the pulley im talking about ... i had one before, but it's not fireproof ...
I'm actually hoping i could completely skip the idler pulley for the compressor, pull off the whole braket (no smog pump) and just run a shorter belt ...
The shop logo wouldnt be faded, mind you. I'm going to do it in regular white paint and let it fade naturally ...
Zerosven
05-31-11, 04:11 PM
on a secend gen you just need a shorter belt, but im not sure if the 1st gen are like that, you could pop the hood and look at the current routing and see if there is away to bypass the AC Compresser like i did. (On my '03)

1) It's cool as hell the BLD is back in action!
2) The Soft 8's weigh 2 tons a piece.
3) Can't argue with the Richmond 5 speed.
4) The logo would be bad ass just use some Rustoleum with Jap Dry in it. Yes it is known as Japan Dry. It speeds the drying and flattens out the paint a little bit if you get too liberal it will also make it break down quicker.
5) If it is going to be a race truck nix the A/C I haven't messed with a first gen in so long I don't remember what the belt routing looks like.
6) Thank god the BLD is back it action.

So, i got myself a set of Elec fans for the Deluxe ... for free. Some guy at work had a Lexus or something of that nature, his radiator blew out, and the mechanic working on it broke the mounting tabs off the fan shoud. The Lexus man got a new set of elec fans, and i have a set of good used ones for free, minus one mounting tab. I couldnt imagine that the tabs would line up to anything for me, anyway ...
Now, i need to figure out how to wire them up .... I'm pondering wiring them up so that one fan kicks on every time i have the ignition on, and the other fan will be on a toggle switch to turn on when i want it on ... thoughts? Suggestions?

Well, to dig up an old thread ... im back to wrenching on the Deluxe again. When i started this thread a year ago, the truck was getting pulled out of the yard on occasion, driven hard around town, and parked again till the next time i had to blow off steam. It spent the winter huddled behind my house with a dead Optima. One night a month or so ago, i was running short on driving vehicles, so i jump started the truck and dug it out for driving duties. He was 3 quarts low on tranny fluid, had no functional wipers, and shook like hell. Still, driving the truck the work the next day reminded me that the truck was just too much fun to wait for the "big plan" to happen, im gonna slowly nickel and dime the truck back into shape!
So im currently on the "fixing whats broke" end of things. I poured in a bunch of tranny fluid, i replaced the wiper motor. Wipers work, but don't park correctly, so i have a wiper circuit board on order. Amy drove the truck, and it smoked a brake line, so i replaced that brake line, found out the rear bleeders wouldn't open, and tore into that. All 4 corners have new brake lines ( i replaced the front to rear when i bought it) the rear axle hose is replaced, and i put new wheel cylinders, hardware kit, and adjuster kits in the rear brakes. I took the drums to work and turned them, and i scuffed and cleaned the shoes, because they appeared to be like new (the drums were out of adjustment, i found out) Brake bleeding will begin tomorrow.
I tore apart the drivers door because the drivers window hasn't rolled down in about 2 years. a $4 clip from Stephen GM dealership fixed that, but almost all the white "christmas tree" clips that hold the door panel on are snapped, so i've got a new pack of them coming from NAPA tomorrow. another $4.
The AC compressor is giving me fits, so it's going to have to go. The trucks going to be getting a bit more bare bones anyways, so it's not going to bother me too much. To be honest, it's never worked in the 6 years ive had the Deluxe. One of the members here (Chest Rockwell) got me a set of the air inlet kick panels, so im going to swap them in fairly soon. I have a AC delete heater box stashed away ... somewhere... I am going to be looking for the AC delete heater control panel, so if anyone knows of one....
Those 18" tires got sold for a bunch of money, and really, im happier to not have them. Plans have changed (they always do) and i've been looking at C5 wagon wheels, although i want all 17's. i plan on driving the truck a bunch this summer, getting a bunch more stuff sorted out, and maybe, i'll have the funds to go hardcore on it next winter.
Stay tuned, i'm getting really bored with my K car, i may have to sell it to buy a Richmond for this truck.

Tonight was a neutral day for the Deluxe. I got the door panel installed, i also got the last of the steel brake lines and hoses installed. I'm ready to bolt the wheels on... one problem. No one to help me bleed brakes. Wifey has Pneumonia, is stuck in bed. Mother says in a very firm, angry voice "NO" ... Dad's in Michigan. All my friends and coworkers live over 20 minutes away, i can't expect them to come on such short notice. Sadly, the Deluxe must wait for another day.
Also, the AC delete pulley was supposed to show up today ... it didn't.

My truck hates me today...
I got the wifey talked into helping me bleed brakes. She is doing a decent job with the whole "pump it up" thing ... and the front to rear brake line blows. i replaced that when i got the truck 6 years ago. FML.
Then, to top it off, wifey wanted to get out of the truck, but was unable to due to the factthat the inside door handle isnt working. i guess i get to tear that apart again too :(
i'm getting close to thinking it might be rum thirty...

If it makes you feel better, i was cleaning the cameo today and took it for some fresh fuel and while i was toolin round in it i found the A/C was cycling quickly and after a quick inspection i found some oil seapage from a leaky o ring at the dryer connection.
So at the very least it'll cost me an orifice tube, a dryer and some refrigerant - its already converted to 134 . see its the little things :)

ok, got back to working on the truck today ... my last day off for the next week or so. Replumbed EVERY INCH of steel brake line on the truck, and i'll say this, getting some of those lines to thread into the prop valve can be a PITA. Either way, got it all done. Front brakes are fresh now, as are rear brakes, so i've got new hoses, wheel cyl., hardware and adjuster kits, turned the drums and rotors, packed the bearings, new calipers, front pads, and refurbished rear shoes. I don't plan on having to screw with the brakes again until i figure out what i want to use for a "big brake/ Rear disc" setup. Had my mom help me bleed brakes, thats always fun listen to her complain while pumping the pedal, but after 40 minutes, we had a solid pedal. No more red brake light. I greased the front end, vacuumed out the interior, and fixed the drivers door so that the inside panel works and the window rolls down. Driver's window hasn't went down in over 2 years ... and its summer.

Went and filled the truck with gas, did a bunch of burnouts and powerslides... all is good in the world...
Began the next mini project on the truck... kick panel vents...
http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac287/bootleggersdeluxe/STA70226.jpg
When you drive in the summertime, you don't have an inch of sound deadener left in the interior, your AC is getting removed, and your roof is painted black, the inside of your truck gets warm in a hurry. One of our members here picked me up a set of kick panel vents and the appropriate panels (right side of pic) so i can get the most amount of breeze into my truck. I got the passenger side swapped in, looks nice. Got the driver's side 90% out, discovered that to remove the final bolt in the plug in the cab on the driver's side, you need to remove the parking brake cable pedal assembly. The E brake hasn't worked in years, so i think i'm going to delete out the pedal for right now, and then look into a center mounted hand e-brake. Has anyone ever had to pull the pedal assembly out of a first gen before?? I didn't see the mounting bolts, but then again, i was getting a bit tired..
Finally, got insurance on the K car and Deluxe... now all of my cars and trucks are insured... and i'm safe to roam the highways and byways ...

i love how my first gen is slowly getting more and more raw. it makes me smile more and more.
So today the Deluxe hit the road for a good 65 miles. drove it to work, took the mrs. out to dinner in it, went and ran errands in it. Amy says it feels like riding in a race car with a radio, i just grinned. Driving on the 4 lane to dinner tonight, i wasn't paying attention, thought i was going about 70, and looked down to see my speedo just over the 100 mark. the 4.3 still has it :D
i've got to adjust the rear brakes a little more, the bedal is firm, but a bit long for my personal preference. I guess im just being picky. I still need to get to that pesky drivers kick panel vent, and then im going to move on to replace the trans lines ... again.
Suggestions on trans lines? i've tore up 3 sets now, its getting annoying. I'm about ready to mount a tranny cooler to the frame, and have flexible hydraulic hoses mounted to the tranny and back.

The stock lines on these things suck. I'd like to try the stainless ones lmc sells but most likely next time I work on mine I'm going with AN hoses and mount them to the frame out of the way.

well ... lets see...
first off, its been about 1100 miles since my last post. i drove this thing a bunch, and keep grinning. also, it's allowed me to figure out what needs attention.
i've noticed a small exhaust leak on the passenger side, so i'll prolly crawl under the truck and snug up all the bolts. The tranny has only taken about 1/2 a quart of ATF ... so i might milk the lines out a bit longer . They're on my list, just not on the top anymore.
i still havent gotten the driver's side kick panel vent installed ... it makes for a breezy drive to work at 7 am ... that might be on todays list of stuff to address...
My AC has never worked in the truck, and the compressor has been growling lately, so it's a good thing that i got the AC delete pulley in the mail today (thanks Tink!) That will be installed tonight, and a lot of the assorted lines will be yanked off of the truck as well.. hopefully i'll pick up a bit of mileage ...
Thats all i got for right now ...

The bypass pulley took a bit more than i was hoping for. I had to clearance the two bolt heads a LOT to clear the pulley. Oh well, one less thing to worry about, less weight and less drag on the engine ...

Nice... The patina is setting up nicely.
Glad you got the pulley ok. I see you left the VA mud on there. I don't remember head bolt clearance issues with it, but it has been many years since I used it.
I like the kick panel vent trim...
I hate to ask a dumb question, but what is the air cleaner off of? I need something like that to mate to the exsisting air cleaner set up on my Camaro when I rip the 3.1L out and put a small block in there.

4.2 or 4.1 caddy bonnet off a mid or late 90s model. Now I can't remember exactly.

Yeah, the bolts were being stupid. I made it work with my Thor angle grinder.
I noticed most trucks didn't have the kick panel vent trim. Even though im trying to shave weight everywhere, They look too cool to not have on ... so they stay.
The Caddy hat is from a early to mid 90's FWD caddy. Just look for one with a 4.9 in it. Anything pre-northstar had them. I used to pick em up all the time for $5 a pop at yards. I'll look for you next time i'm out.
Here's a look at the thread where i built the intake setup...

Well, work slowed to a crawl today so i punched out a bit early. Pulled the truck up onto the lift, discovered where my exhaust leak was... the double walled factory 257,994 mile Y pipe has a hole in it. I think i'm going to write a strongly worded letter to GM saying that they should build stuff better. Either way, a true 2.5" y pipe is about $47 through work, so i'm going to get one coming as soon as i get some funding again.
Also, i removed more AC crap, it's starting to get a little more bare in there... me gusta.
My poll thread on the Cruise control is providing my plenty of info ... i'm going to let it go for a few more days, but i'm thinking the Cruise control stuff is getting scrapped.
I'm also pondering other weight savings, i think i'll start a separate thread for that... then post the results of my doings in here...
Has anyone ever seen a quick removal passenger seat setup? i'm pondering getting/building one, to pull the pass. seat at the track, but still be able to let people ride with me the rest of the time...
Thoughts?

A quick release seat is a cool thought, maybe screw in some 3"threaded rod where the seatbolts belong with some locktite on them. leave about an inch protruding up in the cab and use some wingnuts to hold the seat in place when needed. 4 wingnuts would be quick to remove.

Just a thought... Have you ever held one of the first gen fender wells? They weigh exactly piss... I'm talking 2-3lbs between the pair... I doubt it's worth the effort.
Oh and you said make the tailgate removable like a Ford... Most GM's since 1990 do the same thing... Ford doesn't own that... lol

MY fenderwells weigh less than the average set ... cut there's rust holes the size of softballs in them... as an added bonus, the 235/60R15's rub when i turn hard ... the 275/40R17's don't stand a chance ... methinks they gotta go ...
as for the tailgates, you gotta remember, my truck is an 89, and i've had about 70 Fords, and only one Chevy truck ... so i relate to what i know ...

Open tailgate halfway, pull up on one side, then the other side slides out??
Do 2nd gen stepsides have the gate remove that way?
I'm running no inner fenders on the Baja and my valve covers are plastered with mud, so if you are going to drive in snow it might not be the best idea.

The full size ones might, but my 91 s10 doesn't nor does any 90-92 pickup in the junk yards(I looked as I want a quick release tail gate my self).
OP safe and replace body panels with fiberglass, pulling 1 or 2 pound stuff works. But it will take a LOT of parts to make it work it.

can't say about stepside but my '03 fleetside is this way. putting it back in requires a large screwdriver to pry the left side down a bit though. I think its just ben't, however i don't take the gate off enough to care to fix it. twice in two years lol

so, an update...
Almost 3000 miles since i put the truck back on the road, im cruising along on my lunch hour, sipping on my Pepsi and eating Cheese curds, and i decide to slow down to let some oncoming car to cross traffic. Pedal drops to the floor, red BRAKE light gives me the death stare, and i drop cheese curds as i stubbornly shove the shifter down to 2nd gear. pedal travel is infinite, the rest of the drive back to work was a series of sliding the shifter between forward gears and neutral. I didn't run into anyone.
After work, i swung open the hood (thought about hood pins again) and found out that my master cylinder was dry. no visible leaks under the truck. I've replaced 95% of the lines and hoses in the truck. I top off the fluid, discover that after three pumps, i get a solid pedal. Sounds like a master cylinder is draining it's contents into the booster to me, what do you think??
As i can't leave well enough alone, i guess now is the time to look at hydroboost setups. What master do i need to run? Heck, i don't even remember what i have ...
Where's Jason? (Hammer Head)??

It's the Master.... if there are no leaks.... The booster makes the pedal hard.... it has an internal leak...

Do you think it's leaking into the booster ... or do you think I can get by with just replacing the master??
You can probably get by with replacing the master. Hopefully the brake fluid hasn't damaged the diaphragm in the booster. Those minilites would looks bad azz on the deluxe. :D

Im currently parting out a Mountaineer and nabbed the external tranny cooler off of it... i wonder if i mounted just that on the frame rail and made short lines from it to the transmission, if that would be sufficient...

I think it gets too cold in the winter up there for that. The rad cooler is supposed to help get the trans temps up to operating temps and help keep it there. I ran just the external cooler on mine and it never reached temp in the 30 mile I was driving to the job at the time. I've always been told too cool was a problem (not as big) as running too hot but I'm not a tranny expert.
