2.2 automatic. Jumped time. It's nearly impossible to sell a blown up 13 year old 2wd, so Would love to drop in a carbed 305 or 350, not for racing, near stock will do. I understand about replacing radiator, wiring, oil pump, maybe front suspension, etc. Question concerns the durability 4L60 tranny and rearend. Are they strong enough? Even though I'll be "stock" the tires will still be roasted a little.

The 4l60 behind your 2.2l will not work unless you change the bell housing and some other minor stuff. It probably wont last either. Also you will need a computer to run the 4l60 as they are computer controlled. The rear end will hold up if you are not beating on it all the time.

Find yourself a 305 or 350 with a turbo 350 or 700R4....neither need a computer. Rear end should be ok.

X2.
Even the V6 4L60 / 4L60E is not strong enough. The 3-4 clutchpack will fail.
The 7.5 rear is fine. You really have to beat on them and usually the c-clips fail. I still got the original 7.5/7.625 rear in my 86 TA and its got over 400HP/Tq 355ci. Its got an aftermarket Auburn/gears and bearings when it was swapped. But it held up

Go to the 'yard & find a Cavalier or Sunfire of the same year as the truck in question. They used the same long-block LN2 (<-That's the factory's code for your model engine!) as the S-trucks... The only real differences are the oil-pan, intake-manifold & exhaust-manifold. Everything else is the same, including the rocker-cover (Your best way to identify it from the other engines those J-cars used) except for maybe the coolant/water-outlet neck. (IDK fer-shure...) Pull it, check to see if the timing-chain set needs replacement (Change with GM replacement if needed... Best bet for the money!) and install it in your truck. It's just that easy!

Thirteen years-old, you say? That would make it a '98, right? If so, the same engine can be found in the '98-'04('05?) J-cars I mentioned. Just I.D. the rocker-cover & you'll be set. Plus, rebuilt replacement long-blocks of it are very common... Just get it from a reputable re-builder/re-manufacturer supplier, or you'll quickly come to regret it like I did. (Damn cheapo timing-chain!!)

Also: The W-body cars (Celebrity, Century, Olds Cutlass Ciera, Pontiac 6000) of the same years had them as option, but they may be hard to find. Still, I wish you luck on this man. And if you find a W-car with a diesel engine, lemme know!!

Thanks for the help, guys. Yep it's a 98 with almost 300,000K on it. so it was time... So sad, it was my daily driver for years.
I do have a Chevelle that's been a money pit for years, so i'm pretty familiar with motors, setup. Just never attempted anything like this in an s10
