Ok well Im guessing my sending unit is for **** cuz when I get to about a quarter tank or so my gas guage goes crazy and just starts going from full to empty and back to full really fast and I wanna fix it cuz I dont like how ****ty that looks and also I dont wanna run outta gas one day with a problem that can be fixed so I guess my question is...

How do you replace your sending unit?
Or...
Is this even my sending unit messing up?

Any ideas?

You can purchase just the sending unit now. Has been a huge problem for GM and should be a recall but ain't. I'll see if I can find the bulletin to get the part numbers.

Easiest way is to lift the bed up. 6 bolts, filler neck, rear harness, lift up and you're there. Helps with 3 other guys.

Bulletin No.: 03-08-49-003

Date: March, 2003

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Inaccurate or Erratic Fuel Gauge Readings at 1/4 Tank or Lower (Replace Fuel Level Sensor and Reprogram PCM)

Models:
2001 Chevrolet S-10 Crew Cab Pickup Models
2001 GMC Sonoma Crew Cab Pickup Models

Condition

Some customers may comment that the fuel gauge is erratic, intermittent, fluctuates when at 1/4 tank or lower. Also, the gauge goes from 1/4 to empty too quickly (within 32 km (20 mi)).

Cause

An improperly calibrated fuel gauge may cause this condition. Also, the float arm geometry may have insufficient length to accurately account for the amount of fuel in the fuel tank when the tank is 1/4 full or lower.

Correction

A new fuel level sensor has been released for service. Replace the fuel level sensor. Refer to the Fuel Level Sensor Replacement procedure in the Engine Controls sub-section of the Service Manual (SI Document ID # 692067).

A new service calibration will also be required for this condition. The calibration is available from Techline Customer Support Center (TCSC). TCSC will provide a VCI number to allow the vehicle to be updated with the proper calibration.

So Im guessin Im right on with the sending unit diagnosis. This one sounds like a ***** to do but Ill end up doing it anyway. From the sound of it sounds like a lot of people have this problem. Cough... recall... cough. Ohh well more money spent on useless **** then on **** to make my truck faster or lower.
