View Full Version : Temp gauge gets hotter after sitting with truck off????

I've got a 2000 s10 with the 4.3, while driving around my temp will be normal but if i shut the truck off briefly to run in the quick stop or get fuel etc... when i start it back up my temp gauge is showing the truck is quit a bit warmer than it should be, not running hot but up over 210 degrees.
It will cool back down to normal operating temp within a couple miles but i've never seen or noticed this before?
Only thing i could figure is that the coolant is not circulating with the truck off causing it to warm up a little more before it cools, i don't know, i haven't ever seen a truck do this

That is normal. It is just heat soak.. You have that much heat under the hood just sitting there it will get hotter before it starts to cool down. As soon as you start it up the coolent starts moving and it cools down. All water cooled cars and trucks do it.

ok, i thought it was probably something like that but just wanted to make sure.
Check your fan clutch it probalby time to get a new one.
My 03 run's a lot cooler with a new one.

the fan clutch must be good because it cools down when he starts it up...

Sounds to me like he needs a fan clutch.....

The fan clutch should have resistance when spun while the engine is off. If it turns freely, it needs to be replaced.

it has a little resistance when spun with engine off(doesn't matter if engines hot or cold), if i spin it hard it will continue to spin a little by its self(no more than 3/4 to a full turn)

Sounds normal to me. I wouldn't spend the money on a fan clutch unless I can prove it's bad. Try spinning it after the trucks sat all night. It should be hard to turn. If it blows harder at start up then slows down after running a few minutes, that is normal.

X3, Normal.....
Yeah no chance a 11 year old truck would have a worn out fan clutch....naw
My 03 had around 80,000 miles it would do the same thing & took a few miles or more to recover & would heat up during stop & go driving in 100 + heat so I replaced the fan clutch & it runs a lot cooler & when it does heat soak it recovers approx 1 minute after starting becuase the fan pulls a lot of air across the radiator.
Since it is a clutch performance can degrade over time & performance drop is only gonna get worse.
I could take my fan off in the winter & it never get hot. Not gonna happen in the summer !!!

You should see the heat soak after an smokey burnout a 100hp shot of NO2 an a 1/8 mile run look like. Not saying your wrong with the fan clutch but after owning 3 dimes over the pass 13 years with 2 of them over 200,000 miles that i put on i have seen them act the same way and never have put a fan clutch on any of them. Well just my 2 cents.
Running the ac doesnt help when its 110 out & sitting in traffic.
I thought electric fan's would be better & that was a totally failure in the summer heat so I went back to the clutch fan,its noisy when its hot but the ac is stone cold.

That's because you don't have a 200 hp E-Poppet fan...

Info please.....
I like the electric fan but cant deal with failure when in traffic.

I have been running one for over a year now. When done right they do the job very well. I run between 180 and 200 on 98 degree days. My ac blows 38 to 42 all day long. No fan clutch....

200 E-Poppet FTW LMAO!
I read your e poppet thread & I agree,no increase on power or mileage.
I had the taurus fan & had the low speed as a cooling & the hi speed to come on with the ac,it worked good but was too much draw on the electric system & smoked two 80 amp relays so I went back to the clutch fan.
If I was gonna do efans again I would def get a bigger radiator.

Mine had a mouse nest between the condenser and the radiator when mine kept running hot.

Thanks guys, sitting in traffic really isn't a problem, it seems to do good its just when i would turn it off for a real short period of time and then start it back up is when it seems to show its running warm for a few minutes then will cool back down.
I just put a new radiator and thermostat in it about a month ago due to a plastic end cap cracking and flushed it really good to get rid of the dexcrap.

Who said there wasn't a chance it could be worn?
If his truck is cooling fine at idle why would anyone assume the clutch needs changed? Not every one likes to just throw new parts on their truck on an assumption.
Since e-fans were mentioned, my ls1 fans cool my jimmy great. Every day I just idle along in slow moving Miami traffic with the a/c blasting. It gets hot down here too. My Jimmy actually stays cooler when the a/c is on because the fans are constantly running.
With my JTR HD rad, the LS1 fans, 180 (or 185) degree t-stat, 1 bottle of water wetter, one gallon 50/50 green coolant and topped of with water, my temps never see 200 (according to hpt's scanner)
On the street tune, I have my a/c shut off at any thing over 3000 RPMs and my fans shut of at 50 mph.
On my track tune, I don't run the a/c and my fans turn off at anything over 10 mph. I do that to make sure they are not on when I'm going down the track. Most the time there aren't on while at the line anyways.
So, what ever power the fan/clutch robbed from my engine when it was on there is freed up now. I can feel the drag the alt causes on the engine when the fans kick on though.
