View Full Version : I've been blown! But I've got problems.

Well, I drove down to North Dakota on Friday afternoon, and picked up my Wynjammer! I installed the unit and changed the plugs (I used Delco R42LTS plugs gapped to .035) on Saturday. It looks awesome and sounds mean! I did, however, have a few small issues.
When I went to attach the MAF and air filter, the filter ended up sticking a bit too far up, about 1" to 1 1/2" above the fender. I called Al, and he said that the company he buys the filters from started sending slightly taller filters. It was easy enough to fix, I just lowered the intake tube about 1/2" and cut about 3/4" off the tube.
The accesory belt that was sent with the kit was a little bit too long, so I got one that was about 10mm shorter. Problem solved. Everything else went very smoothly.
Now is where the more serious problems start. (Please bear with me) After I installed the supercharger and changed the plugs I went to tune the computer with the hand-held programmer. I took out the required fuses, and followed all the instructions, and then when it got to where it is supposed to install the tune it just said "Unlocking PCM, Do not disturb" It said this, and nothing but, for 30 mins. straight, where as the instructions say this is supposed to take a few seconds.
Finally I said F*ck It! and disconected the damn thing.
OOPS, I THINK I MADE A BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!
When I went back and read the directions over and over again, I realized that on the page that shows the fuses that I'm supposed to remove, for my truck ('99 4.3L VORTEC) it only shows having to remove 3 interior fuses and THAT'S IT. This is where the confusion starts, a little further down the page it has Under Hood Fuse Removal instructions which includes my year, but doesn't have VORTEC in the title. On the first attempt I removed the propper interior fuses as well as the 1 under hood fuse.
Now if I try to change anything (without removing any under hood fuses) I get an Error D7 code. I tried again with the under hood fuse removed, and it froze on the "Unlocking PCM, Do Not Disturb" message.
So basically now I think I'm totally screwed. When I took the truck for a drive, it runs good, and has no detonation or pinging, But has NO low end grunt! It seems to sort of bog on low end acceleration, but picks up abit around 3000 RPM. So I'm guessing that the programing never worked, and now my PCM may be un-tunable. This sucks.
Sorry for the novel. Am I **** out of luck or what? Do I have to get a new computer, or am I just still not doing something correctly?

i wish i could think of the fuses to pull and disconnect the battery neg. teminal. maybe a nice reset would put the ecu back to normal to where you could program it. hopefully someone else will chime in with the fuses to remove.

Resetting it should put it back to rights. There are two fuses in the fuse box under the hood.
Turn the key to the Run position, but do not start.
Remove the fuses (I forget how they're listed, but should be ECM1 and ECM2, or something to that extent -- I'll try to get pics later today).
Turn the key off and remove. Wait 10 seconds.
Reinstall the fuses.
Start the truck and let it run -- it will probably run like **** for a couple minutes and possibly even die -- no worries, it's relearning everything from the sensors.
it's possible that the tuner programing may be corrupted or you have a tuner.
reset the comp and try agine
under the hood it's the..
int bat(the 1st big 50 amp next to the fuse puller)
emc 1
emc B

Key on, remove 15 amp allmost centered in the relay center, ECM fuse and the batt fuse, then wait a few minutes and turn key off. Replace the fuse and let it relearn idle while running it for 15 minutes and doing a little driving.
Programmers at times call for fuses to be removed because there programming cant override the BCM computer, thats the body module.
This is a lesson to all, read, re-read and read again your programming instructions making it clear in your head the process before doing so. He is lucky it didnt partly upload the old tune and quit, then it wouldnt even run. Once you get it cleared out, redo the programming and make sure it downloads yours, it'll tell you on the screen it did so, then watch to make sure it uploads the new one!

The non Vortec one as you call it for for the CK trucks, they ask that the BCM fuse in the relay center is unplugged. YOur is just having you pull theft running processes fuses because its always on!

Also, and this may already be blaringly obvious, but if you have any other programming inplace (Hypertech, Superchips, etc) you need to remove that programming before installing the ProFlash programming.

Thanks for the responses! I'll try resetting the computer and hopefully that does it. I just hope that my programmer isn't messed now b/c at first it did install all the stock settings. Maybe I'll call ProFlash tech support on Monday and see what they have to say. Hopefully it all works out.
I Had to do a hard reset and i used s/c'd directions and rado's and well, i had to turn the ignition back on after you let is sit, then shut it off.
so when after you pull the fuses, you let it sit for the time said above, then turn the key off, then TURN IT BACK ON and OFF again. Mine wouldn't clear unless i did that, mines an 03 4.3L V6 by the way. it's like it had a flash memory or something.

i hope you have better luck with proflash than i did. the wrong programmer got sent with my kit and to save time al wanted me to deal with them and get a new one sent after i returned the old one to them...after getting jerked around for about 5 calls ( the guy who does them for al's s/c was at lunch and didn't return my calls even though it was over a period of two days). finally i called al and said screw this , he got it taken care of.
good luck

Agh. That sucks man. I just hope that the programmer will still work after I reset the computer. Too bad there's no way to reset the programmer.
I think that before I do reset the computer I'll hook up the programmer and select, Return to stock settings. Hopefully it all works out.
Edit: Do you know the name of the guy who does the programming for Al? Thanks.

no , i was trying to remember his name but can't. i know that i have seen the programmers malfunction and after unhooking them and re hooking them.. they still work properly. hopefully yours does.

UPDATE:
I reset the computer, just like you guys said to do it, and then I couldn't start my truck anymore! It would fire up, rev, and die. I was like, "Oh crap! What have I done now!" Try again and again, same thing. So at this point I'm starting to freak out and willing to try anything. I plug the programmer back in, install the supercharger tune, but still the same thing. As a last desperate attempt, I try checking the DTC codes, and it says there aren't any. Ok.
So I try to start it once more, and VROOOOM there it goes. I sure was releived!!!!!!
It seems to drive alot better and pull alot harder than before, although I couldn't really test the full potential due to slippery roads from rain.
Well, hopefully tommorow the roads are dry and I can really test it out.
Thank you for all your help everyone! Hopefully everything goes smoothly from here on in.

The firing, revving and dying is NORMAL when you reset the ECM. It's going to "ground zero" and relearning EVERYTHING from the sensors. It took 5 starts before mine would stay running the last time I reset it -- and then the second I let out the clutch it died again. But, after it got the info it needed from the various sensors, it went back to normal.
You should be fine. Have fun on those dry streets! I highly doubt that you'll be disappointed.
