Well some of you fellas may have seen/known that i have sold my quad so with some extra cash in hand i needed to buy something. Well last friday i was at work and we had a customer come in to purchase a new GMC, well to my surprise he had traded in a 1 owner 94 Chevy S-10 4.3 4WD 5 speed. Well all i did was see it and had to have it. The used car department only had a 1000 bucks in it and i told them sold!!!!!! It is a quality POS and is need of some TLC but no problem i will hook it up:D

Well was driving the other day and i noticed the air from the vents went full hot the other day ago. Well the crappy part is that my blend door motor took a pooh. All well so this morning i decided to pull the dash and get to the little booger, What a PITA but managed to get it done in just under 2 hours so that wasn't too bad. I know you can get to it a little easier on the later model 2nd gens but crap the 94 95 trucks are a pain. What a way to spend my Sunday.

It was a toss up to either buy go fast goodies for the Xtreme or buy this as a beater and have a spare ride.

You could make this into a sweet 4wd truck in no time! I know you have places to go wheeling down there in NC.

XTREME80

Many places to go. I have been managing to find mud hole every evening coming home from work. Do lots of fishing and hunting down here and there is many off road trials that require a 4WD to get to. Best ponds are the ones no one else can get to.

LOL!

Update my POS truck had a bad exhaust leak from the D/Side manifold, Well a friend of mine was putting in a motor in a 98 blazer and he told me i could have the manifolds off of it. They were in great shape so i decided to do a swap today at work. The old ones despite no rust on the truck were in terrible shape. Needless to say that was fun. Had to weld the nipple up for the EGR on the new manifolds but other than that it was pretty straight forward.

I just recently put motor mounts on her and if any one ever ask me to put some one their dime i will say go get bent. NO! What a pain in the ass. Also put some new good year 235/75/15 rubbers on. Just yesterday i finally got my H4 6000k HID conversion put in. An finally put some AVS vent shades on it, Hate when its raining and the windows cracked and rain comes in.

Ooooooooooh felt so good. I must say i have never had a 4wd truck till now and i love it. Feels really planted to the road when locked in 4wd, an had to get it to slide around while in. While i was playing i thought it would be fun to drive in 2wd for a bit but that didnt last long for me almost eating a ditch. LOL

As many of you know i have a 94 S10 4WD 4.3 5 speed i bought some time back. It has not been taken care of the best of its life. Several weeks back i decided to fix a coolant leak on the intake, It was spurting coolant around one of the manifold bolts. When i got the intake off i new it was going to be a bad deal when i seen a bunch of carbon caked to the valley area. I had a bad feeling i was going to be putting a motor in it soon. So as super careful as i was not to disturb any more than i had too, Several weeks later it has picked up a fatal rod bottom end rod knock. The oil pressure has fallen from 40 psi hot to maybe 5 psi hot. Rather than building a motor and having my truck torn down for weeks i opted to find a lost cost retro.
I was going to do a super low mileage 03 up motor for several reasons. At first i was going to swap the heads from my 94 so i could reuse but after calling around to a dozen places they were wanting $200 to $300 just to redo my 94 heads plus any extras, Valves, extra milling etc. . . . Then an extra 100 plus for a gasket set and head bolts. I thought if i just go that route i would just use the heads that are on my 03 motor already and order an intake an a adapter plate to run my TBI unit. I also considered keeping the 03 heads and doing a full port job on them and put them on my Xtreme but if i go that far i will just build a LSx motor for it, But that's a different story. So let the build begin. . . . . . . . .

I got my motor today........ It is a 4.3 X motor from a 2003 S-10 with under 80k miles an Oooooooh it so clean. I took the intake off and it is so clean it don't even have a golden oil stain color yet. Looks to be grade A+ top shape motor. I also ordered a Edelbrock 2114 intake and a TBI to 4 barrel adapter. I also didn't think about it when i order it but its from a 2WD so i also ordered a 4WD oil pan an pickup screen. It has been a very long time since i have done a clutch in a S-truck so i am wondering on a pilot bushing issue that i cant seem to figure out just yet. I cant seem to find a good pic of the pilot bearing setup on a older motor Vs. a new one. More updates to come.

Well i decide to bring my new motor home today to get ready for my swap out this weekend an it decided to go south on me. I was coming down the highway an pulled of my exit when i heard the most dreaded sound of them all. Click clack boom rattle rattle, The dam thing **** a rod bearing. Well i managed to creep it to the house about 5 miles away. When i got home it didnt sound good at all, It was barely running and sounded as if it was getting tighter an tighter. The funny thing is i think my truck actually new it was going to get a transplant an just decide to say to me SCREW YOU. LOL. I have already started pulling it so we shall see some updates an carnage soon.

OK so i may have found a problem that i seem to over looked. The new engine has a cast aluminum pan on it, The old is a stamped steel. The casting made to the aluminum pan happens to stick out right were the clutch slave cylinder sits... WTF...... Then to top it off i am having one hell of a time getting my old engine out. Looks like either the 4WD pumpkin needs to come all the way out or the trans needs removed all the way. #@!%#$^@*$^(&%_)^*#@!

Jongo88
03-05-11, 05:41 AM
You don't have to pull the tranny. Just drop the 4WD pumpkin and let it hang.... Been there done that..lol.

Tink
03-05-11, 08:53 AM
X2. I had to drop the front diff to pull the motor.

Must be they changed the clutch slave cylinder?

XTREME80
03-05-11, 12:10 PM
I am thinking that i can cut the ear off the oil pan an make the slave cylinder fit but i need to take some more measurements. I will post a pic in a little while. I have a charity cancer party to go to for a close family member.

Jay-Sliver
03-05-11, 12:36 PM
The older 5 speeds used the external slave, the newer 5 speeds (I dont know year ranges) used internal slaves...meaning they are IN the bellhousing clutch area..part of the release bearing or somehting

Any help or did repeat what someone else already said or something you already knew?

The engine is finally out. Wow what a pain. Good news is after looking the clutch slave looks like its going to clear the oil pan. The bad is some douchewaffle once upon a time ago put a clutch in it an messed a couple of the flywheel to crank bolts up. one was so bad i had to weld a socket to the bolt to get it out.

Picture update. You can see the factory 03 heads were never drilled an tapped for my 94 knock sensors. I drilled an tapped them an put some new ones in because my 94 engine refused to let me get the old knock senors out of the heads. Also the blue -8AN 90 degree elbow setup which goes to my brake booster. Also the nipple for the 4WD just to the right of it. Oh an the bolt i had to weld a socket too.

Ok time for some pics and details. Sorry the next few pics are going to be a bit crappy due to my camera phone.

As for the clutch slave cylinder i forgot to take pics. But i can tell you all you have to do is trim the flange were it bolts to the bell housing for oil pan clearance. I also had to use the pilot bearing for a 03 engine because the O.D. was much larger on the new style crank. I was able to reuse and turn my 94 flywheel an buy a new AC Delco clutch kit.

Other than slight modifications it was a pretty straight forward swap. I was able to use the 1" spacer for the TBI for 2 reasons. 1. the TBI has three bolts that hold it to the adapter plate. The plate is only 1/4" plate steel so the original three bolts stick through the plate about a 1/2" rather than making new bolts or trimming them i machined three holes in the spacer to clear them. I also didn't want to machine the holes into my new pretty 2114 intake in case of a mistake. 2. The 1" space actually allowed for better fuel line clearance. I didn't have to modify or cut them. Everything seemed to line up better with the spacer.

I also mentioned they stopped using knock senors in the heads on the newer engines. Easy fix with a 9/16" drill bit an a 3/8"NPT tap. The heads were over a 1/2" thick on the new style heads were the knock sensors would have been mounted.

The only other fix i did do was not long ago i put motor mounts on my ride and much to my surprise when i was pulling the motor the D/S mount was busted again. After a small parts warranty i came up with the idea to make a floating pin setup for my new mount. I drilled 2 5/16 holes all the way threw the mount, I then put two 5/16" bolts threw them an cut the excess off. I then carefully welded a flat washer to the cut off side of the bolt. This allowed for the bolt to float in the mount an act as a stop when it torques up. Also i mad sure the is way over an 1" of gap between the bolt head an the engine block. Doing this i found the rubber could completely gone from the mount an the bolts would not strike the block.

In conclusion unless you have plenty of time this swap was a bit time consuming due to i have not seem this type of swap done before. I searched the net a bit only not to find some much needed info. So this was taken by me that this has not been done before or if so there was limited info on it. I would not recommend this for an amateur wrench head but more for the advanced person. All though i am very experienced i did have a few doubts this would work and had my head scratched a few times. Hope this helps for anyone considering this kind of swap. :D

Ok got a chance over the weekend to take down the old 4.3 out of my truck. It beat out #5 rod bearing but didn't spin it. The rod is good. The engine is very rebuild able. Minimal damage was done, May need a crank though. Also the cylinder bores are in very good shape you can actually see some cross hatching still. Not bad for a 200000 mile engine. The pickup screen was not at all filled with gunk but i have reason to believe something happened to the oil pump itself, I think the relief valve is stuck open or the spring is broken.

Anyone interested in it for parts shoot me an offer, Although shipping may cost an arm an a leg.

Was going to lunch today and my fuel pump decided to say screw you on my 94. Yes i bought a new delphi pump and i had to buy a new basket because of rust. The funny thing is this truck is 95% rust free. Years of wheeling mud an water took its toll on the pump basket lines.

Nice mount :D

I was hoping to see you use the new style accessory drive. Wonder if the new one will work.

It will work and interchange. The crank pulley on the engine is the 03 one, If i had the new style brackets i would interchange them to the newer style. I like the newer style AC compressor and Alt allot better.

I was just wondering cause I have the new style, obviously, and I'm cheap. Thanks for the info.

I had some worn out control arm bushings for some time so i installed a energy suspension control arm bushing kit today. I have just a bit too finish tomorrow. The stuff that looks like rust is not, Its the tar coating from the factory with plenty of red NC clay stuck to it.

The pic fairy left some pictures for you pic whores.

so, in all honesty, how much power/drivability did you pick up with the vortech/edelbrock intake swap? any mpg difference?
any issues or oddities using the tbi PCM with the different heads and intake?

im looking at doing something similar with my current 4.3 tbi powered project.

I am saying this as, The original engine was worn out bad so putting the new setup i went from 14mpg to 19mpg and the butt dyno feels allot better. So i really cant say...

I ripped the carpet out some time back and did a rattle can spray in bed liner for the floor. It has been holding up good.

Time for some updates....

I scored another Accel 300+ box for my beater truck. I now have the 300+ system on both of my trucks.
I have been noticing a hesitation while trying to get up to speed. Long story short the cat converter was stopped up. I spent 90% of today installing a new exhaust from the manifolds back. I will take some pics tomorrow. Man it runs like a scalded dog now.
