View Full Version : I need to get louder.
Alright, I need to get much louder. I moved up from a JL 10w0 which set me at 127 db to an mtx 7500 which pushed me up to 138. I need to get back into the low 140's. I was thinking of another 10w3 to get me there, (thats about the deepest sub I can mount) box is 1+cu/ft big, so airspace isnt a problem (single 10 box, pics in my gallery if you need to look) So my question, is it easier to pick up db in the higher lows or the lower lows? Id like to do a little competing this summer, take the local tuners who are bumping their walmart ****. (then roast them on the track!!)

its alot easier to be louder on a meter with higher freqs
though what is loud on a meter isnt loud to the ear . lower freqs are loud to the ear .
for instance when i do an SPL pass at a comp with my W7's . people almost always run to see where that loud ass sound came from . i play anywhere from 36hz to 42hz with my W7's in the high 140db range .
though when i run 15's playing at 64hz people dont come runnin . even though with 15's i am well into the 150db range .
here's a little rundown we did on s10forums .

You get more SPL by adding more watts to the speaker right?

typically yes . but you can also loose SPL by adding too much power . its refered to as power compression , basically when there is too much power it generates more heat than the normal power to heat ratio. this effect warms up the VC and raises impedence which lower power output on the amp .
Alright xtc, nother couple of questions. Do you know of any good bass sweep CD's that would help get me up closer to 140? My setup is as stands. MTX 275xw 325watt amp bridged to a 10" MTX Thunder 7500 in a 1+ cu/ft box Alpine deck (forgot model number old deck though, prolly 3 years) If i crank the gain on the amp it distorts really badly, I have it now, so the sub setting on my deck at full up is right below the distortion point. Will I continue gain db even with the distortion?

with inaudible distortion you will gain SPL . when its audible distortion you wont .
as for the CD http://club.mecacaraudio.com/?a=merch
