i put a 50 series flowmaster delta flow muffler on my 4 cyl s 10. it sounds pretty good untill i get above about 3000 rpm, then it sounds a little ricy. what can i do to make it sound better? i was thinking mabie a high flow cat but not sure.

I dont know much about 2.2L's

But I'd say get a header, hiflow, cat, keep the flowermaster, and get 2.25" exhaust tubing.

Just an idea?

All I know is on my 2.3L ranger I had stock everything including the cat. I had my uncle install a cherry bomb and have it exit infront of the right rear tire. All I can say is it was perfect!! I got compliments all the time! :hearts_12

Adding a straight through glasspack after the muffler (as close to the end as possible) will remove most of the tinny sound.

your saying run the stock cat plus muffler and a add glass pack or dump the cat?

I'm saying a straight through glasspack close to the end of the tailpipe will tone down the tinny sound.

4 bangers in general sound like crap with loud exhaust anyway.

aint the muffler the problem its the engine size you cant make a 2.2 4cyl engine sound like a 6 or event a 8cyl youre too close to civic liters 1.8 4 they have thats why it sounded ricy ... i jus had installed some 2 chambers speed fx the guy a the speed shop told me they had the same sound as a flowmaster 2 chamber and it was half the cost si i tried it heck it sounds better than flowmaster that freakin hard to believe it has that killer sound i love almost open exhaust my dad as some flowmaster 2 chamber on is van ( 350 in it ) and my truck sound better with these fx mufflers ....

no offense to you guys with 2.2

If you have a turn down right after the muffler, put a tail pipe on it. Doesn't have to go all the way to the back of the truck just about 3 or 4 feet after the muffler. Also with a flowmaster if you have a turn down you are losing torque. The chambered style muffler needs a tail pipe to keep the pressure in the muffler to in turn expell the exhaust more efficiently. I called flowmaster and spoke to a tech support guy to find out why my exhaust was so loud (loud resonation couldn't even talk on the phone) and he said put a tail pipe on it. I didn't tell him I had a turn down, he knew. He said you know with the turn down you are loosing torgue. Well he was right because after i did the tail pipe I felt a little more power all the way through the rpm range and more noticable in the high end range.

but turndowns are louder cooler and with a 350 mildly bit you get that engine pulse right to you .. that is so cool a no a guy who as a big block in is s-10 .. but he* cracked the block at the end of last summer now building something more bad .. he had twin carbs a huge cam high compression piston and a 3000 stall but the turn down would not only make you hear it when i was coming but it would make you feel it 50 feet away and youd feel the engine puls onto your stomach that is so awesome i loved it i got pulled over so many time because of that o and tha slicks he was running in the back when getting back from the strip ..... anyway all that to say turn downs with a bad ass engine rocks

what year... yes it matters..Stay away from stainless steel. It has a very tinney sound to it. put a 3" meg tip or a borla resinator tip. outher that that there isn't much you can do with a 4 cyl sound. You can also get a header for it and that will change the tone a bit.

Turn downs are fine on an engine like that but don't do so well on these 4.3s and 2.2s.

Sounds like a bad ass ride.

How so? I don't get how useing stainless steel piping will change the tone.

different materials have different densities. Therefore resonating at different tones.

Ok, but how much more "tinney" will it make a 4.3L sound? And is the extra durability of stainless worth the cost and noise?

its a 98

stainless doesnt rust...yes, worth it! i have a stainless gibson on my blazer, i dont think its tinney at all, but its not a 2.2 either.

the 98 has a very free flowing cat. If you have over 80K on it you need to have it check though . It actualy flows better than some of the top aftermarket highflow cats.

you can definatly tell a differnce in SS and aluminised steel exhaust systems and no the durability isn't worth the money unless you live in salt road country up north, but aluminised pipe will last just as long as stainless with a little maintinace before and after winter.

I said salt road country.at least it on the roads in the winter and not in the air and roads year round, but i can wash mine year round. I've heard it's near impossible for y'all cold weather Yankees to wash your cars in the winter.

I live on the gulf coast and I have 2 jet skis and an imitation Malibu boat. For us boaters and beach goers rust is a problem around here.i use the zinc spray so I don't have the maintenance issues that most people have around here with their stuff. as for exhaust preferences. I put a Gibson stainless on my truck right after I bought it because it was cheaper than a steel flow-master(hell i just bought a new truck. i was broke), but putting my skies in the water and getting water in my pipes all the time caused it the corrode very quickly and split within just a few months. So i had it replaced with a flow-master(caught up the note by then). soon after I had the stainless exhaust that came factory replaced with aluimnised because it was corroding and starting to split as well(I modified it so the warranty was void). major difference in sound. It has a much deeper sound. as far as the maintenance I was talking about. You have to scrub the pipes and put zinc galvanize paint on them twice a year. My truck gets pretty salty year round because I work at the docks and I'm alway at the beach or the launch with either the boat or the skis so I do have a problem with the chrome tips rusting, but the stainless tips don't last any longer, cost more, and drastically change tone as they heat up.

if you every want to see something cool. come down to the TX/la gulf coast beaches and watch the telephone poles glow from the salt on the poles and the current off the lines. Out buy McFadden and Sea Rim if the conditions are right you can see the poles for miles down the road and there ain't no street light out there.

you can wash em year round, but it is a b*tch washing them in -5* weather and praying your doors dont freeze up. my trucks barely get washed in the winter. i might bring them to a firehouse and use the wash bay, if i have a few hours to wait for it to dry inside...stupid NY weather!
