That is the question, so what do you guys think should be done?

The 3.08's are nice on economy, but are big....then again I think a 3000 stall or slightly higher would be a good combo with 3.08's.

I dunno, yall add in your .02

Although the 3000 will help your 60' time, that wont show on the street as well as the gears would. Id say either the 3.73's or if you want better economy use some 3.42's.

Well it depends on what you've got so far and how you use your truck.

What's your traction like, and what do you shift at? If you got the traction and wheel hop under control and it feels like you bog alittle even at full stall then go ahead and get the converter. Keep in mind the converter woun't help on the street.

With you peaking at 5600rpms the extra gearing will help but may make you have to shift again (what gear and rpm do you cross the 1/4 mile line at?)

There's alot of variables and combos to look at, and sense I don't know everything about your ride I can only guess. I'd say go with the gears first and if you need more then go with the converter.

I cross it in 3rd. The OD ratio is huge with 3.08's, so I keep the tranny in D.

But I never take it to the track and do most of my racing on the street.

As far as traction is concerned, I get a squeek when I punch it, and some slight to moderate wheel hop when flooring it when turning from a stop. It has much better traction than it did before I stiffened and lowered the rear.

Go with the gears then.

With the 2.8, gears, hands down.

Here's your speed ticket on the converter. Get a 2.5 converter. Prolly give you another 400 rpm stall speed for under $200.

With a 2.8 and 700R you should really be using 3.73's in the first place.A set of 4.10's would really wake that engine up.Some 2.8's came with 4.10's and several with 3.73's.Puzzles me how yours ended up with the 3.08's.A nice stall would be good too but you need the gears first.

My 87 2.8 TBI 4WD came with 4.10's. It was a "Tahoe" (emblem on the glovebox) and a "Camper Special" (on door jamb load sticker).

I could get it back for a grand. Hmmmm.......

hehe, yeah the 3.08's are way to big....but it is kind of cool to be doing 80mph at 2500 rpm, hehe.

I cant get both at the same time, one at a time gentleman. Actually me and matt4.3tbi talked about the whole 2.2 converter thing and, but we didnt know if the 2.2 could handle the extra power.

No, 2.2 wouldn't handle it. Wrong converter anyway (pwm solenoid). You would use the 2.5 converter.

would the 2.5 withstand it?

Same converter with a higher stall. Not much, like I said, 'bout 400 rpms. Enough to shave .2 off your 1/4 mile time. Worth doing IMO.
