View Full Version : Anyone ever run the 3.1L Camaro MPFI?
Has anyone run or seen anyone run the multi-port fuel injection from the Camaros on a 60 degree V6 in an S10? Any thoughts on this? Would a CPI fuel pump work?
Trying to come up with something to do with Lil Blue... I have a MPFI 3.1L which would bolt up nicely to that manual... plus, I'd like to do something different, so no V8. I also could go carbed 4.3L because I have a sh*t ton of 4.3Ls laying around... just wouldn't work with the manual, but I also have a 700R4 from the old 91 Blazer.

So long as it's from a camaro & not a FWD mounts should be the same as the 2.8.

Its been done a handful times. Not really any gain to it unless you just wanting a project. The f body intakes are an afterthought for the most part, just made something fit in the space they had and worried about making it run right 2nd. I know of a few 2.8 and 3.1 mpfi setups that were running but they have since swapped to a 3x00. One guy I can think of running a 3.4 but even he has said the gain wasn't what he thought it was gonna be and suggests against it. The f-body pump puts out the same as the s-series.
I understand ya doing it cause ya have the parts already but with all the work a 3x00 swap would be much more worthwhile. Require the same harness and intake work just also includes a head swap. F-body guys do this and get gains of over 200 with very little work.

Sorry, I thought it was the whole engine.
Yup, fuel injection... I was thinking it was rated at 135hp vs the 115hp that carb set up has... right now that poor truck couldn't get out of it's own slow ass way...

More of that hp is from the different cams. The trucks, jeeps, and troopers tended to have a higher torque cam while the f-bodys, boat motors, fieros had a higher hp cm. There was a small gain from the fi setup but it want great.
The carb 2.8 also has smaller valves in the heads.
Sorry I keep forgetting lil blue is a carbed truck. To swap over to fi is gonna be the same trouble either way. If your not doing anything else with it could be fun. Don't remember what year it is but going to ecm you will need a vss. The 85 models with cruise are the only ones I know of with the old dash and a spot in the cluster to hook a vss up. Same style as the 86-88(9) vss with cable speedos.
I would throw a cam in it from a ponitac fiero/3.4 gm (same cam), get a set of 3500 fwd heads, a 3400 intake, and run an obd1 that will support the dis. From memory the ecms from eary cavys will support it. That combo alone should be good for 200-205 hp. A simple port and polish, roller rockers (roller tip1 .6 are stock) and headers with the right exhaust should easily push it to he teens maybe 20s. He he he, yeah I've had this plan going in my head since I got my 91 but on top of a 3.4 and not a 2.8. On the bigger engine it should push the 230 mark.
On lil blue I would do a head swap first, a set of iron fi heads. Maybe a cam swap to the f-body 3.4 one. Being a carb you can get pretty big with the cam. F1.6 rocker can also be found easily. Many of the fwd had stamped steel ones if roller or roller tips are out of the question. A few chevys had roller truion rockers from the factory. Of course only fwds got em.
I do have the whole Camaro 3.1 that could go in there... and currently I am running a NP231 from a 91 Blazer - wouldn't that have the correct feed?

I forgot about you puttin the old blazers stuff in there. You have too many trucks that you have done "custom" stuff to lol.
Yeah the 231 should have the correct vss hook up. I would chech and make sure its the right pulse for the camaro ecm. I did know more cause I researched putting the 3.4 fi in my blazer when I was doing the swap but have slept since then.

I've got a 3.1 Corsica that I have thought swapping into my '98 S10. Great little runner. I'm a fabricator so the front drive mounts are no problem. Perfect for parts chasing and doing truck chores. Problem is my 98 is OBD II and the 3.1 in the Corsica is not. Never get it to pass emissions.

You can turn a 2.8 into a 3.1 by using the crankshaft.
The 3100 topend is a step up from the iron heads but isn't the best. Early j bodies ran multiport with dis and obd1 if I remember right. The motor mounts on a 3100 will be off and the starter is on the wrong side. Might as well stick with the 2.8 block and make your life easier.
