i want to hook up my subs and amps, but i want to prevent my battery from being drained by just sitting their listening to the subs pound, would anything bad happen if i hook the power wire up to the back of the alternator? probally isnt a good idea come to think of it, might over extend the alternator and the battery acts as a reserve. am i on the right track?

since the battery and the alternator are still linked it wont prevent much of anything . though your amp will now be succeptable to the voltage spikes that a battery filters out .
if you want to be able to play it forever with the vehicle off and still start right up and drive away . you need to run an isolated secondary battery ( usually a deep cell ) . all you need is a battery isolator ($30-100 depending on size), a second battery ($40-500 depending on size and brand ) , and some wiring 1/0ga - 4 ga ($1- 7 a foot ) and some smaller 10-16 ga wiring ( 50ft roll $8 ) .
pretty simple to wire up . and it will allow you to play your system for hours with the truck off . then while people are laughing at you saying there is no way that truck will start , you crank it up and drive off . leaving them to feel real stupid .
