View Full Version : air box hack
i did the air box hack job today just in case any of you were wondering if it works worth a damn. not that my opinion is held in high regard here but never the less. i basically followed the instructions in the link below(give or take a hole). well anyway it wasnt to hard to do and what i found is it is deffinently a noticeable difference. the only drawback i found (which isnt a big deal to me so far) is when you punch the gas it has a dirtbike sound(not as loud as a dirtbike of course). so far so good.

any tips or anything you'd like to share about it? feel free to write up a walk through and post it in the articles section. more articles the better. :)
You can get rid of the "dirtbike" sound by adding the belting to seal it to the firewall :D
That is my "write-up" linked above. Feel free to add it to the information pages if you wish.
right on man that was a good article. where did you get the rubber?

The factory box is a restriction only because of its sound deadening horn. Take he horn out and make a new larger one or whatever to go to the area behind the headlight and it works better than a CAI. It just makes so much noise pulling air in under the hood if you seal it to the front end it no longer makes the noise under the hood and travels into the cab so you hear it!
03 rado is right. i was on the freeway today and i was getting on it good so imho its deffidently tollerable noise. or if not attach the rubber strap and henry j said it will go away and it also keeps the water out.
The "rubber" that I used is some thin sheet belting. It is about 1/8" thick with a woven core.
Mine came from a government surplus. It may have been used as gasket making material. A trip to Home depot , or another large hardware supply should yield some material. Or cut up and old tractor tire tube. I'm sure your local tire shop could fix you up with a damaged tube that you could cut up.
Thanks for the kind comments. I got the ideas from the forums. The information seemed to be disappearing, so I made the page to be sure that others could find the information and mod their own boxes.
I have since gone to a K&N FIPK, but the modded box worked very nearly as well.
If I did it again I would just stay with the modded box.

Never thought of doing that to the head light braket. I wonder if it makes a difference? I pull my headlight when I go to the track anyway so I guess it doesnt really matter. I'm thinking of running a cold air tube through the fenderwell and out to the front bumper somehow. I want to get my bravada bumper first though.
say slowzq8 did you notice a difference with the hack
and henryj was it the money to power ratio which would of made you keep the stock hacked box instead of purchasing the fipk?

dont complain, my machined and bored TBI makes this really loud suck noise when I give it gas. I dont mind it though, it sounds cool, not a dirtbike sound at all.
