We all know removing the stock intake off the TBI and replacing it with a 10inch round air cleaner and K&N style filter will aid in air flow thus improving power.I have ran a K&N filter for a couple of years now in my S10 and it did make a very noticeable improvement in power. And when it got dirty I would clean it and back in it would go.Well about 2 weeks ago or so I was in the local Wal-Mart doing the usual useless shopping when I saw the Air filter section.I saw something new from Fram that looked like a regular filter with a new spin on it called the Tough Guard. It wasn't very expensive so I bought it just to see what it would do.I am always wanting to try new stuff it's just a habit of mine.My K&N was still clean because I had just cleaned it a few weeks earlier.I replaced it with the Tough Guard and as strange as this might sound it actually seems to run a little better.Maybe it's in my head but I doubt it since I was actually expecting it to decrease air flow and hinder performance. It's color is yellow and it seems like it's made of a different type of paper or gauze or something but it is a pre oiled air filter just like K&N's are.I even swapped the K&N back in and it actually felt weaker than with the Fram.I'm gonna see how it does for awhile but unless it it starts lowering performance when it gets a little dirty it's staying for now or unless I find a reason to remove it.I don't know but here is a pic from another thread I posted in that had nothing to do with the filter so you can see what it looks like.http://www.sicgmtrucks.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1317&stc=1

what was the price, and can you re oil it or do you have to buy a new one. I threw a brand new fram on mine just to see if there was a diff between it and my k&n, YES
it ran like dog**** with the fram on it.

I think it was less than 10 bucks or so.And I don't think you can re oil it.I am no fan of the old regular paper filters but this one is different it seems.I mean you can look at it and tell it's not a regular old paper filter.I also bought a Accell power foam filter from Summit im gonna try out and see how it works. It was cheap enough so no biggie if it doesn't work. This is what they look like.http://www.sicgmtrucks.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1354&stc=1

Ok, I picked one of these at walmart today, cost 9.86+tax. I threw it on in the walmart parking lot so I could drive around town and see what I thought. Overall I am impressed. It preformed as well as my dirty K&N, and for a quarter of the price of a new one, that is a darn good accomplishment. I will keep it on until through the summer since I will be working on a dirt road. The K&N went into hybernation. Overall I would give this a good rating, the same seat of the pants feel as a K&N, for a quarter of the price? Absolutely.

Interesting. Just might have to check it out. The yellow color will match my plug wires.

I knew it was cheap just couldn't remember exactly how much.I am still impressed with it and remember I started off with a basicly clean K&N filter. When I get the foam filter I will post pics and info if it makes any difference.

I must say, that filter is as ugly as sin!

In airflow tests, the K&N doesnt flow but slightly better than a regular paper filter. The thing that has always sold me on K&N was the fact it pays for itself after you clean it a few times.

Oh, and TMan....paint that filter housing to match the rest of the engine compartment!
