Where do you live would be a good start.
Then what swap are we looking at?

Yes a lot more info needed to give you a better answer. But in general no swapping one engine for another same application engine will not cause you to fail emissions if it is done right, for the most part. But to many variables to just give one simple answer.

I also am lookin for either a 350 or 383, i just want gobs and gobs of torque
In most states that have engine swap restrictions, they simply require you to swap in an engine (regardless of size) that is the same year or newer.

drumbum87, i live in porter county right next to you and to do an engine swap you need to have three things
1. the engine that goes into you truck muest be of the same year or newer
2. the new engine must have the same emmissions fittings as your truck did (i.e. egr, air, 02's, locking gas cap, charcoal canister). in other words, no carbs.
3. you must be able to pass tailpipe emmissions. what i mean by that is whatever you truck put out new, you must be able to meet or beat that with the new engine.
i got all this info from www.jagsthatrun.com

consider yourself lucky.....I never had to till I moved to this county.....more of a pain in the butt than anything.....unless you really like modifying cars.

cherryred, it is only certian counties in indiana, such as lake, porter, and and a couple or three in the sw part of the state...
Thats weird, your in indiana and have to do an emissions test. That sucks.

yea, it does, but the plus side is that if i want to do a v8 swap and not worry about emmissions is i can plate it in LaPorte county (next county east of lake ad porter). they dont have emmissions...
tricky question to answer with 100% certanty,The cali roders proved that a carbed engine will pass an e-test if it was tuned well, but you don't have this option due to the year of your truck. FI takes a little more knowledge and money to get tunned right, but any engine can pass an e-test provided it is tune and the emissions are intact and working. The 4.3s cpi engines don't do as well as most vortec sbc FI v8s on the tailpipe anyway. your lucky you have the v6. If you had a 4cyl it would be allot harder.
With the conserns about emmisions dismissed, the consern now becomes an issue of money.

when going froma v6 to a v8 in an s10 and you want to pass tailpipe emmissions, i have seen people run true duals with 2 cats and an x/h pipe right ofter the cats and they "claim" that they pass emmissions. dont know if they do or not because i never looked for a new decal on the doorjamb...
2 cats are unnessisary. v8 is a more complete engine than a v6 and slightly more efecintly. This dosn't mean it gets better gas milage it means it's more capible of burning the fuel and useing it to complete the charge better.

With the conserns about emmisions dismissed, the consern now becomes an issue of money.I disagree slightly with this some.Yes a carbed engine can be tuned to pass emissions but not as easy as fuel injection.A carb will not keep a 14.7:1 AFR constantly like a fuel injected engine can.A carb can be adjusted to the right mixture but it will not continuously monitor and adjust the AFR like fuel injection. The batch fire CPI isn't as efficient as the sbc vortec is but the SFI vortec 4.3 is.Now the LS1 based vortec engines are more efficient than the 4.3 and the pre 99 vortecs are.But that's a totally different engine altogether. And you wouldn't necessarily have to use 2 cats to pass emissions test but a dual exhaust will make more power and have twice the filtering capability with 2 cats.
I also am lookin for either a 350 or 383, i just want gobs and gobs of torqueIf your wanting a boat load of torque literally lol, then throw a Duramax diesel in there.
Same agenda here...I have a titless 94 4x4 blazer with a 4.3L V6 Vortech in it that.
I want to take the engine out of that and put it in place of my 2.5L 4 banger. I live in NC and we do have to get our vehicles inspected but only for running conditions and smog. Would this be feasible?
I have looked at some place and asked over at mys10.net forums but no one really payed attention or gave any advice/opinions.

Just a basic tailpipe test wouldn't be a problem. An IM240 test is a different story though.
The problem with answering a question like this with any certanty, is it is something that is hard to say one way or another over the internet. We would love to help. As far as I have heard, if you swap an engine from your year or newer it will pass a visual. Im not so sure how it would pass a smog test. Shouldnt be a problem if you tuned it right.
