hey guys leaving work today i was having a lot of problems getting my auto to shift into second so i turned around and checked things out and went to back up the shifter goes into place but nothing happens, now before i go and call the tranny shop what should i check first? or does any one have advice on what i should do?

i was letting my truck idle, no codes, but i hear this odd sound while at idle and when i am in gear it just sounds like the gears are not meshing.... any thoughts?

Don't let 'em burn you for a full re-build if it doesn't need it. I've sent reaction shell jobs out the door for $600.

Tranny shop. ATRA member, AAA certified. Ask for references. Ask straight up for a price on just a reaction shell replacement. Be courteous and professional. If they're ****s, you'll know.

check the dealer price and then go to the tranny shop, accually you may be able to get your insurance to pay for the repairs, but you have to pay a deductable of course

Mr Bravada

lol, the dealer was spacey.... but the shops in town wouldn't touch just a part while they have it apart....so the quote was $1900-ish but i found one at the salvage yard near my house that has less than 37K miles for like 800-ish but would it just be better off to have it rebuilt or just swap in a used one? but i will call the dealer tomorrow... but i will check in to having my insurence foot some of the bill, because my $500 deductable is WAY better than the alternative......

yea it always fun to throw a salvage tranny in your truck only to find out the valves are stuck the, the clutchs are welded teghter from abuse, the case is cracked because bubba the salvage yard mecahnic pulled it out with a backhoe and crowbar, or front pump is shatered and the output shaft is bent from the wreck that put the truck in the salvage yard......don't pay No more than core(250bux) for a salvage tranny unless they'll give you warrenty.

It's in your intrest to have your current tranny rebuilt...COMPLETLY....don't nickle and dime major repairs you'll just be back paying more labor in a couple of months.

i think the rebuild is the way to go.... plus it does come with a 24 month warranty, and besides they pick up and deliver with major repairs.......lol and i think that this qualifys

ok, so i checked our dealers site www.aksales.com and found that i can get a transmission assembly for like 1800-ish... i was like 'well d@#& i can go get a new one for the price of a rebuild.....'
tell me that i can't be reading that right..... i mean if push comes to shove i'll just go that route...... i'm calling my dealer in the morning... but does that sound right?

Well, subtract the core and s/h you've got yourself one heck of a deal there. I'd call around for a better price. Also, it's not new, it's a GM SRTA (service replacement transmission assembly). Comes with a 3 yr/36k warranty that's good at any GM dealer coast to coast. Also comes with the converter.

yea that price was with-in like 12 bucks ($1841) so that looks right like that, but it won't tell me whether my dealer has any in stock so i am going to call first thing in the morning and check to see if may be i would be more likely to benefit from this route......

Sparky2263

The core charge is 350. Once you get that back your outlay is down to $1483. Save the S/H and you're down to $1255. Not that you'll buy for that much but it's a good negotiating tool.

Print it out from GMPartsdirect and see what different GM dealers in your area will do. Believe me, prices on engines and trans. ARE negotiable at the dealership parts dept.

sparky thank you!! you are a life saver!! i will do just that.....

we do only have 2 dealers in town... lythia and alaska sales but i'll go talk to my dad and get him to come with me

Sparky2263
08-19-05, 12:52 AM
Keep forgetting you're in Alaska. Guess parts are a little higher there.

Mr Bravada
08-19-05, 12:56 AM
yea, but its ok.... its still better than if the tranny shop bust out with it will be like 2 g's to rebuild that bad boy.....

Mr Bravada
08-19-05, 06:57 PM
ok, the tranny shop was like since you were making enough power to break this part you may want to consider a perf. oriented rebuild, but since they have a deal worked out with the local speed shop i get the higher cap. bands and stuff instead of stock and they are getting the aftermarket reaction shell case that holds more power than i make and even better will switch me over to full synth. fluids because they only use syn. on full rebuilds but its included within the quote.
So yea, its gonna cost me but for like $1900 i get a rebuild that is stronger than it was and a 24 month warranty.... that covers everything but rally type mud boggin' and it even covers drag racing on the track out here because they are the lead sponcer.....

Sparky2263

Sounds like a heckuva' deal! Good idea beefing that thing up.

Mr Bravada
08-19-05, 07:49 PM
yea, and done by trained people..... = priceless....lol, and in like 4 day, shoot, i can make it till wed/thurs w/o my truck... but it sucks because my g/f bought me some stuff for my b-day (tues, 23rd) and i can't put it on because i won't have my truck......
