Well, as winter fast approaches, I have been told that advancing my timeing is going to be beneficial. I wonder if this is true, and if so, is a clockwise turn going to advance it?

If it's the 2.8 you're referring to those respond well to a bunch of advance. How much is a bunch? Well, if it starts pinging, kicking back on the start or idling rough, that's more than a bunch.
