anyone see the video or hear the story about the high speed chase in south carolina? trooper did a pit move to a nissan pathfinder at 85 mph....what's your take on this?

Mesa's draft policy would make a PIT at 35 mph or above considered a use of deadly force. The policy would not allow the method to be used during pursuits of motorcycles.

The PIT is not applicable in every situation. Typical police policy is not to attempt the PIT at greater than 35 miles per hour (55 kilometers per hour). Its effective use requires careful choice of location, considering all possible effects on other traffic and pedestrians. Because of the police department's potential liability for the injury or death not only of the occupants of the target vehicle but also to bystanders, most departments limit its use to only the most high-risk scenarios. Most departments specify that the PIT should only be used to stop pursuits that are immediately dangerous and ongoing. When possible, three pursuers should be present when a PIT is executed: one as the PIT vehicle and two following at a greater distance to react to the results.

A pit move is when they tap one of the sides in order to spin them out.

Well, I know I'm going to get a lot of flak for this, but I'll open my big mouth. . .

1) The moron in the Pathfinder should have STOPPED when the police indicated for her to do so.
2) 85 mph IS excessive for the officer to have attempted a PIT move, but he did what he felt was the only option to minimize a serious threat to public safety.
3) What if the moron in the Pathfinder had lost control IN TRAFFIC and killed another motorist.
4) "For more than 60 miles at speeds of more than 100 mph" -- she was a serious threat to other motorists: fathers, mothers, children, sons, daughters. Are they worth sacrificing for someone too afraid or stupid to accept the consequences of their actions? NO! Watch the video. The Pathfinder was weaving in and out of traffic at a very HIGH rate of speed. Ever driven a Pathfinder? They don't handle all that well, and it was only a matter of time before she lost it -- and that could have claimed the life on someone just on their way to the zoo!
5) We don't need more compassion in this world. We need LESS STUPIDITY. This story shows "survival of the fittest" at it finest.

Call me heartless, call me crazy, but I think the officer did what he felt he HAD to do. The fewer morons like that we have on the road and in society, the better off we all are. The whole tragedy could have been avoided if she had only stopped and faced the consequences of her actions. She was stupid, and that's that. "For SIXTY MILES at speeds of more than 100 mph" -- that isn't someone afraid of a simple speeding ticket. That is someone that had no concern whatsoever for the lives of others, and is therefore a menace and was (thankfully) removed without any other tragedies.

What if it were me? Well, to be honest, I would have pulled over, had my license, registration, and proof of insurance ready and taken my well-deserved lumps. No matter what you try, you CAN'T outrun the police (nor should you try). People need to figure this out -- you may be able to outrun a cruiser, but you can't outrun a radio and will eventually get stopped -- dead or alive.

i wont bash you for this...because i do agree with everything you said...my point of view is it was not the best choice by the officer at the time he did it...yes, no one else was hurt...which is good...but the pathfinder could have spun wrong and went backwards into other vehicles...and yes, it would be great if we could eliminate stupidity...but until hell freezes over...some moron will do it!

well....the way i see it the officer most likely didnt intend to kill the passengers, and he was a cop and they were running from him so he had every right to do what it took to stop them. If he hadn't have used teh PIT maneuver then imagine that they were going further down the interstate adn lost control themselves and hit anotehr car (or cars) and killed other innocent people...sometimes you jsut have to weigh the options.

The driver decided to put everyone on the road in danger and paid the ultimate price. Dumb decision.

you ask...I'l answer. It's not going to nice or pleasent..
First you need to understand pitting. It's dangerous not only for the idot that runs, but fr the cop who is pitting. no cop likes to do it exspecaily at high speed. It puts you in very close to the criminal and leaves you open to get shot and you yourself can lose control very easily. It also messes up your car. you do know that in some departments the deductable comes out of your pay.

no I don't thinck the officer used his best judgment in pitting someone at high speed, but he was was doing his job and should be comended for it instead of being paraded in front of the media. you ask someone to do a job, but won't let them. leave the guy alone!!! If your not prepared to do the time don't do the crime.

We ask these police officers to risk their lifes to uphold what we thinck of as the law for very little money, but point fingers and call them the bad guys if they make a mistake. Yes it's true there are bad cops, but that is up to their department and their bosses to decide not us.

It cost us allot less money and we would have more police and less crime if we just let the police do their thing. More police means more jobs. Just thinck of the money saved on the womens trial now that she's not going tie up courts and sit on her *** in jail while "We The Tax Paying Masses" have to suffer.

In the end the driver shouldn't have run!Did the cop make the right choice...YES!but at the wrong time!I would love to see the other 60 mile's!they had enough cars to box her in than use the spike strip's on her.

And i think everybody has forgot about the passenger!

holly cow, i cant believe i am actually gonna say this, but i agree with BVR. all except the total lack of empathy at the end, about her sitting on her *** in jail. I realize that what she did was wrong and dumb, but there was a life lost, bad or good, it was still a life

As a former Military Police officer I have used this maneuver a few times but NEVER above the 35mph limit, that was very stupid of him. His best bet would have either been stop sticks or the tire popper roll, but using the pit stop is WAY beyond excessive, I would have to dissagree with the officers methods.

Blazer69

i agree that it might have been excessive and should have tried other methods but not sure how many of us have ever been in any situation even close to that...he made a split second decision and did what he thought he had to do to protect the lives of everybody else on the road...
