i dont like going below a 45 series just cause its dangerous for the rim, but thats why i only got 17's.

Yeah, the 45 will give you a little more meat. On the 18's i have in my garage, the rears are 245/45/18's, and there is about an inch and a half to two inches of sidewall.

i run 255 35's on my 20's and have never had a problem but when i have 225 35 on my 18 inch 212's the road won that battle

so what would be the thickest sidewall i would be able to put on a 20 inch rim and still be good to fit under my wheel well without rubbing.....?

probably a 50 or 55 series. Anymore and it would look stupid.

how much are you dropped? i can run a 255 35 20 all around and at ride height since i am bagged i can still do everything and my ride height is not even at stock height for a S10 and with that wide of a tire i have a ton of sidewall

its riding at factory height. and question for the sizes of tires what are the actual meanings...? like 245/45/R20....? i know "R" is the wheel size, but what does the "245" and the "45" mean....? i looked at the information above, but i still dont understand it..

The 245 is the width in MM of the tire. So a 235 would be 10mm narrower than a 245. The next number is called the aspect ratio. It is the sidewall height. I learned it as the aspect ratio, i.e. 35 would be 35% of the width, but I dont think that is right. Someone can clarify. And yes, you are right, the R stands for radial, and the number after that is the wheel size.
