I just want to start of saying that this is what I did on my truck. I believe it will be similar for other 1st gen trucks though.

This mod is great, not only does it give classic muscle look to the underside of your hood, but it also gives noticble hp and tq improvements.

(Will only work with TBI units with 1 filter housing hold down)

Estimated cost

Housing Assembly 20.00-40.00
Breather 6.00
Re usable element (Optional) 40.00

Total Cost 66.00-86.00

Disassembly

you must begin by removing the stock "cold air" tube. It is held in by a screw in the top and a hose clamp on the connector to the filter housing.

Next, remove the air cleaner lid and set aside.
Note. If you dont feel you have basic technical knowledge, simply flip the lid, replace wing nut and go on your way.

On the driverside there is a hard plastic hose that connects the housing to the valve cover. Remove, but do not throw away!!!

Remove the two vacuum lines. Remember where they attach to.

Remove the retaining clip from the plastic sensor piece on the back side of the intake. (Has a weather pac connector attached) Save the sensor.

Remove air filter and save, and the housing. The housing may be a little stubborn in its seat to the throttle body assembly.

Prep (make sure you have your parts ready)

Any local auto parts store (autozone, or o'rilley will be your best bet), will have open element kits that include the base plate, a filter, and lid.

*Important. Make sure of 2 things. 1 the base diameter is the right size. (Big enough to fit a 4bbl carb) and 2 the assembly is a 10" (Same as your stock air filter diameter)

I chose an edelbrock kit, I believe it ran me no more than 40, you can however get as cheep as 20 though. While there, purchase a push in breather. From experience I would tell you to buy the kind that has a hose fitting on it. Mine just vents to the valve cover, and it has oil on the plug wires.

Take the sensor you removed, re attach the vacuum line.(if you havent already)and the weather pack plug, and zip tie to the firewall. I chose above the distributor as an ideal place for mine.

remove the other vacuum line, it plugs into a "T" connect that runs into the throttle body base. plug with a screw.

Reassembly

Push breather into valve cover, re using stock grommets.

Place the new base unit on. Chances are the filter included will not clear the tb, but if you use your stock air filter the height should be ok. Block off any holes in the base unit, either with a bolt and washers like I did (hey, it worked) or some other method. Make sure it is air tight!!!!

Replace stock filter This would also be a good time to upgrade to a reusable element. I have used a K&N in every vehicle I have ever owned and been very happy with them.

Put new lid on, tighten the wing nut, and enjoy!!
