GM has done it to themselves. They kill off good models and replace them with crap.

"Another reason for concern is GM's possible exposure if next year the Financial Accounting Standards Board (javascript:siteSearch('Financial Accounting Standards Board');) (FASB), which sets U.S. accounting rules, requires companies to show a liability from pensions instead of a net asset. Such a move could wipe out GM's shareholder equity, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday."

That would be the death blow. "You owe HOW MUCH!?!".

Oops.....

I figure they will Pull a ford stunt and send production south of the border, Then They will loose all credibility as a domestic auto maker, I will never ever purchase a ford ever again and if GM does it i dont think i would buy a new GM model ever again either, On top of foregin labor having the worst quality standards that sends our money out of the US and into the pockets of foregin countries, We allready give enough to the world, Now we have to loose our livleyhood too!

I read on a chevy forum that the goverment is going to bail them out, and I olso read that they are going to mexico for ther assembally plants.
If this is true I dont think the goverment should help them at all if they are just going to take there jobs out of the us.
I think if they could do away with the union things may turn around. Not that I am against unions or anything but I think the union is what got them into trouble. That and the poor choice of cars they are building.

The poor choice of cars, and the sky high prices. They build junk that nobody wants, and couldn't afford anyway.

GM is way to bulky with re-badged flavorless cars with to many brands. They need to cut the fat and quit re-badging the same cars. Also they need to cut the fat that the UAW chokes out of them.I'm all for a good union and getting good pay for a good job.But the UAW is draining the **** out of GM with crazy contracts. And they need to fire the majority of the designers and start fresh with the ones willing to be bold and exciting.Look at Dodge and how bold they are to build the wild. And it doesn't take them almost 5 years to take a car from concept to production. And last Fire Lutz and Wagoner and get new young blood in that has a better brighter bolder vision for GM.If they don't do something and quick GM will drowning in a pool of ****.

I concur... it seems that unions are doing nothing but bleeding manufacturers dry. Corporate structure and Corporate waste are a big factor too. I work for a HUGE corporation (a tobacco company, in fact). The amount of money thrown at a problem around here is amazing.

I also feel that perception is one of the biggest problems... so many people still have bad memories of General Motors (and Ford) cars that have failed them in the past and feel that foreign automakers vastly outpace domestic in quality. While that may have been correct 15 years ago, it is not currently. If you believe J.D. Power's surveys for luxury brands, Buick was rated fourth best in reliability.

Due to personal experience, I am brand-loyal GM but I have found that I pretty much stand alone.
