View Full Version : Tranmission noise please help
Has anyone ever had the problem of a 2.2 liter 5 speed transmission making a rattling noise at idle in neutral foot off the clutch.
I had the transmission serviced and they put in all new bearings and it still makes noise. It has a new clutch and throw out baring and presser plate and pilot shaft baring. When its cold it don't make noise. Just when it it hot. It sounds like a ice making machine.

Did it make the noise before all this work was done? Or only after?
What did you mean by "had the transmission serviced and they put in all new bearings"?
Why did it need new bearings?
Most likely cause of a rattle that goes away when depressing the clutch pedal is the release bearing or input shaft moving around.
They thought it was a bad bearing. They put a new input shaft in it too. That is what it sounds like a input bearing.
It made the noise befor, thats why I had them service it. I had a new clutch put in and it still made the noise so I had them open it up to find out why it is making the noise and they replaced the input shaft and all bearings. I still makes the same noise. I have invested 1,200 dollors and still have noise.

I have kinda the same prob with my 2.2 5 spd, mine makes it all the time, and i had smeone look at it. They said it was the output shaft int o the drive shaft. The bearing couldve gone bad.. but to fix it, i will have to tear open the whole tranny AGAIN, (i put in a new clutch a few months back.) so i decided to let it go for now, cuz its just an annoying noise, it shouldnt wreck anything

Hi,
I just jioned in on this and was interested in what you have going as I too have the same problem with my 1984 s-10 4x4 2.8 Durango.
Could it be the flex plate or the starter needing a shim to adjust the starter?
On my old jeep when it made this nose it was the throwout bearing

Thank you for the reply,
I just gave up on trying to figure it out the sound and bought a used 327 engine and a TH 350 with a short shaft tranny to put in my 84 S-10 durango 4x4. Will have to do some work on the engine but will have fun when it is done.
Thank you again, New Girl
